There is something about thumbing back the hammer on a single action that never gets old, and the Chiappa 1873 S.A. lets you do it all day for pocket change. This is a faithful take on the legendary 1873 Single Action Army, scaled to a genuine full size frame, so it fills the hand the way a proper Peacemaker should. The 4.75 inch barrel is the classic gunslinger length, balanced and quick to the target, and the six shot cylinder loads one at a time through a traditional loading gate with the hammer at half cock, just like the originals.
Chiappa built this revolver as a hybrid of old and new. The barrel wears a steel rifled liner for accuracy and long service life, while the frame and most of the internals are made from a specially formulated alloy that keeps overall weight around 2.2 pounds. That combination gives you the heft and pointability of a full size sixgun without the cost of an all steel centerfire gun, and the .22 LR chambering means recoil is basically nonexistent. Fixed blade front sight, checkered black grips shaped like the classic SAA panels, and a matte black finish round out the package.
This is the kind of revolver that turns a casual range trip into an afternoon. It is a natural fit for plinking cans, punching paper, teaching a new shooter the fundamentals of a single action, or knocking down small game at reasonable distances. The manageable trigger and easy cocking hammer make it forgiving to run, and since it feeds on cheap, easy to find .22 LR, nobody is counting rounds. If you have ever wanted to try cowboy style shooting without a big investment, or you just want a fun rimfire wheelgun with real character, the Chiappa 1873 S.A. is a hard combination to beat.
Just like the original Single Action Army. Put the hammer at half cock, open the loading gate on the right side of the frame, and rotate the cylinder to load one round at a time. Ejecting spent cases works the same way using the ejector rod under the barrel.
Yes, and that is one of its biggest draws. It is built on a full size frame close to the Colt SAA and Ruger New Vaquero footprint, with grip panels sized like the originals. Most rimfire single actions are scaled down, so this one gives you an authentic Old West feel in the hand.
No. This revolver uses a traditional frame mounted floating firing pin rather than a transfer bar, so the time tested practice applies: load one, skip one, load four, then lower the hammer on the empty chamber. That keeps the hammer resting over an empty hole, the same way single actions have been carried for generations.
It is a great trainer. The single action design forces a deliberate pace, the .22 LR has almost no recoil or muzzle blast, and ammo is cheap and easy to find. The easy cocking hammer and light trigger make it simple for new shooters to focus on sight picture and trigger control.
