The 3 inch chamber handles the full range of 20 gauge turkey and field loads, and the 4+1 capacity gives you follow-up shots if the first one doesn't seal the deal. The gas system does a nice job of soaking up recoil compared to lighter inertia guns, and the rubber recoil pad takes the rest of the sting out of stout turkey loads. A fiber optic front sight picks up light well in dim timber, and the grooved aluminum receiver gives you a mounting option if you'd rather run an optic. Sling studs come standard, which matters more on a turkey gun than just about any other shotgun since you'll carry it a lot more than you'll shoot it.
The barrel is threaded for the Beretta/Benelli Mobil pattern, one of the most common choke systems out there, so tightening up your pattern with a dedicated extended turkey choke is simple and affordable. Chokes are included out of the box along with a wrench and a case, so you can pattern loads at the range and get set up for the field without extra purchases. The checkered synthetic stock and forend shrug off rain and briars, and the Strata camo pattern blends into hardwoods and field edges alike. For a spring turkey rig that won't wear you out on the walk in, the 601 Turkey covers the bases well.
Yes, and most turkey hunters will want to. The barrel uses the Beretta/Benelli Mobil choke thread pattern, which is one of the most widely supported systems on the market. Extended turkey chokes in that pattern are easy to find from Carlson's, TruLock, and plenty of other makers, so tightening up your pattern for 40 yard gobblers is a quick upgrade.
Absolutely. Modern turkey loads, especially TSS, have made the 20 gauge a legitimate gobbler round with dense patterns well past traditional distances. The lighter gun and softer recoil make it a great pick for long walks, all-day sits, and newer or smaller-framed hunters.
The 601 Turkey comes with a fixed fiber optic front sight, which works fine in most timber settings. If you want an optic, the aluminum receiver is grooved for mounting, so you can add a red dot with the appropriate dovetail mount. A lot of turkey hunters run red dots these days since tight chokes leave little room for aiming error.
Better than you'd expect from a six pound gun. The gas-operated action bleeds off a good chunk of the recoil impulse before it reaches your shoulder, and the rubber recoil pad handles the rest. Stout 3 inch turkey loads are still no picnic in any lightweight shotgun, but the gas system makes this one noticeably softer shooting than a comparable pump or inertia gun.
