There's a lot to like about a walnut and silver over/under that comes ready to hunt straight out of the box. The Charles Daly 202A is a 12 gauge break action built around an aluminum alloy receiver, which keeps the whole gun light enough to carry through a full day of upland hunting without your arms complaining. The receiver wears a laser engraved hunting scene that gives it the look of a much fancier gun, and the checkered walnut stock and forend finish off the traditional style nicely. A rubber recoil pad on the buttstock takes some of the sting out of heavier loads.
The 28-inch barrels are chrome lined steel with a ventilated rib and a red fiber optic front sight, giving you a smooth swing and a bright aiming reference in low morning light. Chambers are cut for 3-inch shells, so you can run everything from light target loads to stouter hunting loads. The single selective trigger has a mechanical reset, meaning the second barrel fires even if the first shell doesn't go off, which is a genuinely useful feature when you're shooting light reloads or cheap promo ammo. Barrel selection happens right on the tang safety, and extractors lift your spent hulls for easy removal by hand.
Five choke tubes ship with the gun, covering everything from tight full patterns for longer shots down to open constrictions for close flushing birds and skeet. The barrels use the common Mobil choke thread pattern, so aftermarket tubes are easy to find if you ever want something more specialized. Swap chokes between the top and bottom barrel and you've got two different pattern options ready on a single trigger pull.
At right around 7 pounds, this is the kind of double gun that works as well breaking clays on Saturday as it does chasing pheasants in November. It covers the traditional over/under experience, wood, engraving, twin barrels and all, without demanding a safe queen budget. For a first double gun or a knock-around field companion, the 202A checks the important boxes.
This model uses extractors, which lift the spent shells out of the chambers when you break the action open so you can pull them by hand. Some folks prefer extractors on a field gun since your empty hulls don't end up scattered in the brush. It also keeps the mechanism simpler overall.
Five tubes are included, running from Full down to Skeet, so you're covered for tight long-range patterns and close-in work alike. The barrels use the widely available Mobil thread pattern, which means finding replacement or specialty tubes is easy at just about any shop that carries chokes.
