Slug gun hunters know the drill. Plenty of shotguns can throw a slug downrange, but few are built from the ground up to do it well. The Browning Maxus II Rifled Deer is one of the few. Its 22 inch thick-walled, fully rifled barrel is made to wring every bit of accuracy out of sabot slugs, and the cantilever Weaver-style rail is attached directly to the barrel, so your optic holds zero even after you pull the barrel for cleaning. That is a detail that matters more than most people realize until they have re-zeroed a receiver-mounted scope for the third time.
Underneath the Mossy Oak Bottomland camo is the same Power Drive Gas System that runs Browning's waterfowl and upland autoloaders. It soaks up a surprising amount of recoil from full-power slug loads and cycles fast enough that a follow-up shot is right there when you need it. Add the Inflex recoil pad and a SoftFlex cheek piece, and a 3 inch slug feels a lot more manageable than it does out of a pump or single shot. The gold-plated Lightning trigger breaks clean, which helps when you are squeezing off a careful shot at a buck standing at the edge of your effective range.
The composite stock features a close-radius pistol grip and overmolded gripping panels that stay planted with cold or wet hands. The receiver is lightweight aluminum alloy, keeping the whole package around 7 pounds 3 ounces, easy to carry into a stand and quick to shoulder. Capacity is 4+1 with 2-3/4 inch shells, and the 3 inch chamber handles magnum slug loads without complaint. Integral sling swivel studs make it simple to add a sling for the walk in.
Top it with a quality scope or red dot, find the sabot load your barrel likes, and this autoloader will stretch your slug range further than you might expect.
The fully rifled barrel is designed for sabot slugs, which is where it really shines for accuracy. Avoid running standard rifled Foster slugs through it regularly, since they can foul the rifling and group poorly. Try a few different sabot loads to find the one your barrel prefers, as individual barrels often favor a specific brand or weight.
No iron sights come on this model. Instead, it has a cantilever Weaver-style rail mounted directly to the barrel, so you can add the scope or red dot of your choice. Because the rail is barrel-mounted, your optic holds zero even when you remove the barrel for cleaning.
It is noticeably softer than a pump or break action slug gun. The Power Drive Gas System bleeds off a good chunk of recoil energy during cycling, and the Inflex recoil pad soaks up more at the shoulder. Full-power 3 inch slugs still have some push, but most hunters find it very manageable.
Yes, the 3 inch chamber handles both 2-3/4 and 3 inch shells, and capacity is 4+1 with the shorter shells. Like most gas guns, it runs best with quality full-power loads rather than light target ammo. Stick with performance-level sabot slugs and cycling should be very reliable.
