There are plenty of wood-stocked autoloaders out there, but not many stop people at the gun counter the way this one does. The Maxus II Hunter Maple wears a gloss-finished AAA Grade maple stock set against a black anodized receiver and matte blued 26-inch barrel, and the contrast between the light figured wood and the dark metalwork is genuinely striking. A SHOT Show Special from Browning, it takes the proven Maxus II platform and dresses it up without changing what makes it work so well.
Underneath the pretty wood is Browning's Power Drive Gas System, which cycles a wide range of 2 3/4 and 3-inch loads while soaking up a noticeable amount of recoil. Combine that with the Inflex II recoil pad and you get a 12 gauge that stays comfortable through a long day of clays or a busy morning in the dove field. The Lightning Trigger carries the fastest lock time of any autoloader, breaking clean with minimal travel, and the back-bored barrel works with the included Invector-Plus choke system to keep patterns even and shot deformation down. Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder tubes come in the box, so you can cover most upland and clays situations right away.
The stock is shim-adjustable for length of pull, cast, and drop, which means you can dial the gun to your build instead of adapting your mount to the gun. That matters more than most people realize; a shotgun that fits swings better and hits more. Sighting is handled by a fiber-optic front bead over a ventilated rib with an ivory mid-bead, giving your eye a fast, natural reference on crossing birds and clays alike.
At about 7 pounds with a 47 3/8-inch overall length, this gun carries easily and swings smoothly, splitting the difference between a dedicated clays gun and a pure field piece.
