Description

Browning took a shotgun that already had a reputation for cycling just about anything and made it better. The Maxus II Auric runs on the Power Drive gas system, which vents excess gas on heavy loads and captures more of it on light ones, so the same gun that eats 3.5-inch waterfowl magnums will cycle modest field loads without a hiccup. That kind of flexibility matters when you shoot early season doves with the same gun you drag into a December duck blind. The Lightning trigger is a genuine standout too, with a fast, crisp break that autoloader fans have come to expect from this platform.

Built for the Marsh, Dressed in Auric

Browning's Auric camo covers the composite stock and forearm, a pattern designed to disappear in flooded timber, cattails, and cut fields alike. The stock features rubber overmolded grip panels where your hands land, a SoftFlex cheek pad that keeps your face comfortable through long volleys, and the Inflex recoil pad that channels the stock down and away from your cheek under recoil. Combined with the gas system soaking up a chunk of the push, heavy loads feel far more manageable than they have any right to.

Maxus II Auric Features That Earn Their Keep

The 28-inch barrel is back-bored with a lengthened Vector Pro forcing cone, which reduces shot deformation for more even patterns downrange. A fiber optic front sight and ivory mid-bead give you a fast, clean sight picture in gray-sky light. The oversized bolt handle and bolt release are easy to run with cold or gloved hands, and the Speed Load Plus system sends the first shell straight from the magazine to the chamber, then unloads just as quickly. Three extended Invector-Plus choke tubes come in the box, covering everything from decoying birds to long passing shots. At around 7 pounds 2 ounces, it carries well on long walks and still swings smooth when a flock drops in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the Browning Maxus II Auric cycle light target loads?

Yes, that is one of the strong suits of this platform. The Power Drive gas system was designed to run reliably across a wide range of ammunition, from lighter field and target loads up through 3.5-inch magnums. Like most gas guns, give it a proper break-in and keep the gas system reasonably clean and it will run just about anything you feed it.

What choke tubes come with the Maxus II Auric?

It ships with three extended Invector-Plus choke tubes: Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder. That trio covers most hunting situations right out of the box, from birds working the decoys to longer passing shots. Since it uses the Invector-Plus system, there is a huge aftermarket of waterfowl and specialty chokes available if you want to fine-tune your patterns.

How is the recoil with 3.5-inch shells?

Noticeably softer than you would expect. The gas operation bleeds off a good portion of the recoil impulse, and the Inflex recoil pad is designed to direct the comb down and away from your face as the gun comes back. Heavy magnum loads still let you know they are there, but a full day of shooting is a lot easier on the shoulder than with an inertia gun or pump.

What is the difference between this and the Maxus II Wicked Wing?

This model wears full Auric camo coverage on the stock, forearm, receiver, and barrel. The Wicked Wing version pairs the Auric camo furniture with a Cerakote Burnt Bronze finish on the receiver and barrel for extra corrosion resistance. Mechanically they are the same gun underneath, with the same gas system, trigger, and chamber length.
