Duck hunters have been trusting the Super X line for a long time, and the SX4 Waterfowl Hunter shows why. At the heart of this 12 gauge is Winchester's Active Valve gas system, the same proven design that made the SX3 a favorite, refined here with better balance, upgraded internals, and controls you can run with cold, wet hands. It cycles everything from light field loads up to heavy 3.5" magnums, and it does it fast while soaking up a good chunk of the recoil along the way.
This version wears full Mossy Oak Shadow Grass Habitat camo across the stock, forearm, barrel, and receiver, so there is no shiny metal flashing at incoming birds on a bluebird day. The composite stock features a slimmer pistol grip and textured gripping surfaces that stay put when everything around you is soaked. Winchester also enlarged the bolt handle, bolt release, and trigger guard opening, small touches that make a real difference when you are wearing gloves in a December blind. An Inflex recoil pad and included length of pull spacers let you tune the fit and take the sting out of heavy goose loads.
The 28" barrel carries a ventilated rib and a TruGlo fiber optic front sight that picks up light in gray, overcast skies. Back-bored barrel technology and a chrome-plated chamber and bore help throw dense, even patterns while standing up to steel shot and corrosion season after season. Three Invector-Plus choke tubes come in the box, Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder, covering everything from decoying teal to pass-shooting honkers.
At around 7 pounds with a 4+1 capacity on 2 3/4" shells, the SX4 Waterfowl Hunter swings quick, carries easy on long walks to the blind, and shrugs off the weather that keeps fair-weather guns at home. It is a workhorse autoloader that earns its spot in the boat.
The Active Valve gas system is designed to handle a wide range of loads, from light field and target loads all the way up to heavy 3.5" magnums. It automatically adjusts gas pressure to cycle reliably across that spread. Like most gas autoloaders, giving it a good cleaning after a lot of light loads keeps things running smooth.
It ships with three Invector-Plus choke tubes: Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder. That trio covers most waterfowl setups, from birds finishing in the decoys to longer pass shots. The Invector-Plus system is widely supported, so aftermarket waterfowl chokes are easy to find if you want to fine-tune your patterns.
Yes, the barrel features a chrome-plated chamber and bore and back-bored technology, and it is built with steel waterfowl loads in mind. The included Invector-Plus chokes handle steel as well. Just follow the general rule of avoiding steel through extra-tight constrictions at full power.
Winchester includes length of pull spacers so you can adjust stock length to fit your build and your layers of hunting clothing. The standard length of pull is 14 1/4 inches. Combined with the Inflex recoil pad, it is easy to get a comfortable fit that tames heavy loads.
