Plenty of folks want one over/under that can pull double duty between the clays course and the bird field without buying a purpose-built gun for each game. That is exactly the thinking behind the Citori CX. The C stands for crossover, and this 12 gauge wears a 30 inch barrel set with a 3 inch chamber, a vented high post rib, and a 60/40 point of impact that sits comfortably between a flat sporting setup and a high trap gun. You get a little extra float on rising targets at the trap line, but it still points naturally on crossers and flushing birds.
The barrels are back-bored with Vector Pro lengthened forcing cones, which smooths out patterns and takes a little sting out of recoil, and the Inflex recoil pad soaks up more of what is left. Browning includes three extended Midas grade Invector-Plus chokes in Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder, so you can go from tight trap patterns to open skeet distances with a quick swap. The Triple Trigger System lets you adjust length of pull and swap trigger shoe profiles to dial in your finger position, and the ivory front bead with a mid-bead makes lining up your eye down the rib simple and repeatable.
This is the same action that has kept the Citori name around since 1973. The full-width tapered locking bolt seats deeper into its recess as the gun wears, so the action stays tight through decades of heavy use instead of loosening up. The chambers are chrome plated, the receiver is polished blued steel dressed up with gold accents, and the gloss Grade II American walnut stock gives it the kind of looks that get noticed at the club. At around 8 pounds 3 ounces it has enough weight to swing smooth and stay steady on long strings of targets, yet it carries fine on an afternoon pheasant walk.
Whether this is your first serious over/under or the do-it-all double you have been meaning to add, the Citori CX covers a lot of ground with one gun.
It was designed to do both, which is the whole point of the crossover concept. The 60/40 point of impact splits the difference between a flat sporting gun and a high-shooting trap gun, so it works across trap, skeet, and sporting clays while still pointing naturally on live birds. If you only shoot one discipline, Browning makes dedicated versions like the CXT for trap, but the CX is the pick if you want one gun for everything.
It ships with three extended Midas grade choke tubes in Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder. The barrels use Browning's Invector-Plus system, which has been around for years and has a huge selection of aftermarket and factory tubes available. Plenty of owners add a pair of Skeet chokes for close work, and they thread right in.
This is one of the Citori line's biggest strengths. The full-width tapered locking bolt is designed to seat slightly deeper as the action wears, so the gun stays tight rather than getting loose over time. Combined with chrome-plated chambers and a heat-treated, precisely fitted action, these guns routinely run for tens of thousands of rounds.
The Triple Trigger System lets you adjust the trigger position to fine-tune your length of pull and finger placement. One trigger shoe comes installed on the gun, and additional shoe profiles are available so you can set up the grip-to-trigger relationship that fits your hand best. It is a nice touch for getting a proper fit without a trip to the gunsmith.
