There's a reason the Citori has been the benchmark field over/under for more than fifty years, and the Hunter Grade I in .410 bore might be the most fun way to experience it. Built by Miroku in Japan like every Citori since 1973, this one pairs 28-inch polished blued barrels with a 3-inch chamber that also runs 2-1/2 inch shells without complaint. At just under 7 pounds, it carries easy through a long day of squirrel woods or quail cover, and the low-profile steel receiver puts the barrels right where your eye expects them.
This is a working gun that doesn't look like one. The Grade I American walnut wears a smooth satin finish with 18 LPI checkering, while the receiver gets tasteful gold enhancement and the trigger guard carries the gold Buck Mark. The gold-plated trigger uses Browning's inertia-driven design for a clean, consistent pull, and the tang-mounted safety doubles as your barrel selector. Automatic ejectors kick spent hulls clear so reloads stay quick when the birds are moving. The Inflex recoil pad is along for the ride too, though with a .410 you'll barely notice recoil in the first place.
Three flush Standard Invector choke tubes come in the box (Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder), which covers everything from tight patterns on late-season rabbits to open spreads for close-flushing birds. The 14-1/4 inch length of pull and silver bead front sight keep the gun pointing naturally, and the transverse full-width locking bolt is the same stout lockup that's made Citoris famous for going tens of thousands of rounds without loosening up. Yes. The chambers are cut for 3-inch shells but handle 2-1/2 inch loads just fine, so you can run whichever length your favorite small game or clays load comes in. The chrome-plated chambers also make cleanup easier after a long day of shooting.
It ships with three flush Standard Invector tubes in Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder. Note that .410, 28 gauge, and 16 gauge Citori models use the Standard Invector system rather than the Invector-Plus found on 12 and 20 gauge versions, so buy replacement tubes accordingly.
Like every Citori since the line launched in 1973, it's built by the Miroku Corporation in Japan. Miroku's fit, finish, and machining are a big part of why Citoris have such a strong reputation for lasting through decades of heavy use.
It's one of the best. Recoil is minimal, the gun weighs just under 7 pounds, and the simple break action makes it easy to verify it's safe and unloaded. Just keep in mind the .410's smaller shot payload rewards good fundamentals, which is exactly why so many wing shooters credit a .410 with making them better shots.
