There's a certain kind of shotgun that gets babied in the safe because it feels too nice to drag through a briar patch. The Citori Hunter Grade II is not that gun. Browning built this one to be hunted with, and the 28 gauge version might be the sweetest of the bunch. At roughly 6 pounds 15 ounces with 28 inch barrels, it comes up fast, swings smooth, and won't wear out your arms after a full day chasing quail or grouse.
Underneath the good looks is the same Citori architecture that's earned a reputation for going the distance: a full width tapered locking bolt, full width hinge pin, and action components machined tight and fitted by hand. The receiver wears a tough silver nitride finish with gold enhancement, the barrels are gloss blued, and the Grade II/III American walnut stock has a satin finish with cut checkering that gives your hands real purchase without chewing them up. An Inflex recoil pad caps it off, though in 28 gauge you won't be asking much of it.
The 3 inch chambers are chrome plated for corrosion resistance and easy cleanup, and the hammer ejectors kick empties clear for quick reloads when the covey flushes twice. Three flush choke tubes come in the box, Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder, so you're covered from tight passing shots to close flushing birds. The 50/50 point of impact suits field work, and the vent rib with silver bead front sight keeps your eye moving to the target instead of the gun.
The 28 gauge has a loyal following for good reason: light recoil, quick handling, and surprisingly effective patterns on upland birds and clays alike. Put that cartridge in a genuine Citori with wood this nice and you've got a gun that works as hard as it looks good. This is the kind of over/under that ends up getting passed down.
This model has 3 inch chambers, so it runs everything from light 2 3/4 inch target loads to full 3 inch hunting loads. The chambers are chrome plated, which adds corrosion resistance and makes cleanup easier after a wet day in the field. That flexibility makes it just as at home on the skeet range as it is in the uplands.
This is where the little gauge shines. At roughly 6 pounds 15 ounces with a between-the-hands balance, it carries comfortably all day and comes to the shoulder quickly when a bird flushes. The 28 inch barrels give it a smooth, steady swing without feeling sluggish, and the open radius grip keeps handling fast.
It has true hammer ejectors, which kick fired hulls clear of the gun when you break the action open. Unfired shells are simply lifted for easy removal by hand. It's a real convenience for quick reloads when birds are moving, and it's one of the features that separates this gun from budget over/unders.
Browning includes three flush-fit choke tubes: Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder, plus a wrench to swap them. That trio covers most field situations, from close flushing birds over a pointing dog to longer crossing shots. The gun patterns with a 50/50 point of impact, which is the classic setup for hunting.
