The Bond Arms XLV Rough Series splits the difference better than most, running a 4.25 inch flat-sided double barrel over a stainless steel frame, chambered for two rounds of .45 ACP. That longer barrel does more than look good. It stretches the sight radius so the fixed blade front and rear sights are genuinely usable, and the added steel up front soaks up recoil in a way the stubby three inch guns just can't. At 25.6 ounces, this is one of the smoother shooting big-bore derringers Bond Arms builds.
The Rough Series guns skip the high-polish finish in favor of a bead-blasted matte stainless look, but nothing changes underneath. Same stainless barrel and frame, same machining, same core features Bond Arms is known for: the rebounding hammer, retracting firing pins, cross-bolt safety, and spring-loaded cam-lock lever that keeps the barrel locked up tight. The matte finish also happens to be practical, since it shrugs off scratches and glare better than a mirror polish ever will.
The XLV wears Bond's B6 extended resin grips with a smooth backstrap, which give you a fuller hold than the compact grips on smaller models and make a real difference when you touch off a .45. Those broad flat barrel sides are left clean intentionally, so if custom engraving is your thing, you've got a ready-made canvas. The XLV started life as a limited edition and joined the full production lineup in 2025 without the commemorative markings.

The only real difference is cosmetic. Rough Series guns get a bead-blasted matte stainless finish instead of a high polish, while the steel, machining, and features like the rebounding hammer and cross-bolt safety are the same grade as Bond's dressier models. Many folks prefer the matte look anyway since it hides wear and cuts glare.
It's stouter than a full-size pistol but very manageable here. The XLV weighs 25.6 ounces, and the extra steel in that 4.25 inch barrel sits right where it does the most good for taming muzzle flip. The extended B6 grips with the smooth backstrap also give your hand a fuller purchase than the short grips on smaller Bond models.
Bond Arms designed the flat-sided barrel specifically as a canvas for custom engraving, and the sides are left blank from the factory on purpose. The design traces back to a limited edition model before the XLV joined full production in 2025. Even if you never engrave it, the flat profile gives the gun a distinctive look and adds recoil-soaking weight.
