The Beretta 92XI SAO FS Desert DPM is part of a limited-edition collaboration between Beretta USA and Howe Arms, a veteran-owned business founded by Richard Howe, a two-tour Army combat veteran who served in Afghanistan. Each pistol in the Foreign Combat Series is hand-painted by disabled combat veterans, with the Desert DPM pattern paying tribute to the camouflage used by British forces in arid and desert environments. Because each one is painted by hand, no two are exactly alike.
Under the finish is the full 92XI SAO package. The frame-mounted ambidextrous safety is one of the most significant updates to come to the 92 platform in years, moving the safety lever into a much more natural and accessible position compared to the traditional slide-mounted setup. The X-treme S flat-faced trigger is single-action only, with DLC-coated components and a lightweight skeletonized hammer that deliver a clean, consistent break with a short reset. The Vertec-style frame gives it a straighter grip angle that many people find more intuitive, especially if you have a background with 1911-style pistols.
The optic-ready slide comes pre-cut with a proprietary MRDS footprint, so adding a red dot is a straightforward job with no custom machining required. Iron sights include a bright red fiber-optic front for fast target acquisition and a serrated fixed rear. The aluminum frame features a Picatinny accessory rail up front, and the grip texturing is aggressive enough to maintain a solid hold without being uncomfortable during extended range sessions.
With a 4.7-inch barrel and a sight radius of 6.1 inches, this is a capable, accurate full-size pistol that performs well both at the range and in a defensive role. The Desert DPM Cerakote finish on the frame and slide, paired with the black DLC barrel, gives it a look that stands apart from the standard lineup while also providing solid protection against corrosion and wear. This variant ships with two 10-round magazines.
The 92XI SAO swaps the traditional double-action/single-action trigger system for a single-action-only setup with a flat-faced X-treme S trigger, DLC-coated components, and a skeletonized hammer. It also moves the safety from the slide to the frame, which is a more ergonomic position that allows for a more natural thumb engagement. On top of that, the slide is optic-ready and the grip is the slimmer Vertec-style frame rather than the thicker original 92 profile.
The Desert DPM pattern is applied as a Cerakote finish by Howe Arms, which is a ceramic-based coating known for its resistance to corrosion, chemicals, and general wear. It is not just cosmetic. The DLC-coated barrel provides additional protection and reduced friction. Because each pistol is hand-painted, there will be minor variation between individual guns, which is part of what makes each one unique.
Yes, the 92XI SAO is compatible with standard Beretta 92-series magazines. The Vertec-style frame does use a slightly narrower grip profile than the original 92, but it still accepts the same magazine family. This means your existing Beretta 92 mags, including higher-capacity options, will lock in and function normally.
The 92XI SAO uses Beretta's proprietary MRDS footprint on the slide. Mounting plates for popular red dots are sold separately. Installation is straightforward: remove the factory cover plate with a 2mm Allen wrench, install the appropriate mounting plate, and torque the screws to 15 inch-pounds. No gunsmithing or aftermarket slide work is needed.
The Foreign Combat Series Desert DPM is genuinely both. The hand-painted finish gives it real collector appeal, but the underlying 92XI SAO platform is fully capable as a defensive pistol, with a reliable open-top slide design, proven 92-series mechanics, an accessible frame-mounted safety, and an accurate flat-faced trigger. It is not a display-only gun.
The 92XI SAO is manufactured at Beretta's facility in Gallatin, Tennessee, like most of the 92X-series pistols produced for the US market. The hand-painted Desert DPM Cerakote finish is then applied by Howe Arms, a veteran-owned company that employs disabled combat veterans.
