There's a reason the Arex Zero 1 series drew comparisons to the SIG P-series from the moment it hit the market. This is an all-metal, hammer-fired 9mm with serious Slovenian pedigree, built on a milled T7075-T6 aluminum frame with a steel locking block and topped with a cold hammer-forged, nitrocarburized steel barrel. The machining and finish quality on these pistols consistently impresses, and the Compact version trims things down just enough to make it a realistic carry option without sacrificing the confidence that comes with an all-metal gun.
The DA/SA trigger system gives you a couple of ways to run this pistol. Carry it decocked with the safety on for a heavier first-shot double-action pull, or go cocked-and-locked with the safety engaged for a lighter single-action pull on every round. The single-action break is clean and the reset is short and audible. An ambidextrous safety and magazine release make the controls genuinely usable for left- and right-handed shooters, and a loaded chamber indicator on top of the slide gives you both a visual and tactile check when a round is chambered.
The slide is milled from solid bar stock and finished in a matte black nitrocarburizing process that holds up well to wear and corrosion. Front and rear cocking serrations give you solid purchase for press checks and administrative handling. The full-length Picatinny accessory rail on the dust cover is ready for a light or laser without any modifications. Fixed steel 3-dot sights are dovetailed into the slide front and rear.
The Zero 1 has been put through its paces in military testing, including extreme temperature cycling, drop tests, and hostile environment exposure, and it passed. With a rated service life exceeding 30,000 rounds and a manufacturer's limited lifetime warranty for the original commercial purchaser, this is a pistol built to be used, not babied. The Zero 1 Compact runs a traditional double-action/single-action system with an exposed hammer. The first shot fired from a decocked pistol uses the longer, heavier double-action pull, and every shot after that operates in single-action. You also have the option to carry it cocked-and-locked with the manual safety engaged, which puts the trigger in single-action mode from the first shot. The decocker safely drops the hammer without firing the round.
It's a metal-frame pistol, so it's a bit heavier than a comparable polymer gun, but the compact dimensions keep it manageable. At 7.1 inches overall and about 27.6 ounces unloaded, it sits in a similar category to a Glock 19 or SIG P229 in terms of carry size. Plenty of people carry it IWB with the right holster and belt setup, though it's more of a dedicated carry piece than an ultralight option.
It's chambered in 9mm Luger (9x19mm). All Arex Zero 1 pistols are approved for SAAMI-specification +P loads, so you can run hotter defensive ammunition without concern. The cold hammer-forged, nitrocarburized barrel is built to handle it.
The two guns share a lot of DNA. The Zero 1 Compact draws clear design influence from the SIG P-series, with a similar profile, control layout, and DA/SA manual of arms. One meaningful difference is that the Arex adds an ambidextrous manual safety alongside the decocker, giving you the cocked-and-locked carry option that the standard SIG decocker-only setup doesn't offer.
