There is a reason the FireFly looks familiar. GSG built this platform in the same spirit as the classic German-made rimfire trainers, and this smoke gray version is the updated take: an aluminum frame with an integrated Picatinny rail, a serrated aluminum slide, and a bumped-up 13-round magazine. At 26.6 ounces with a full-size grip, it carries the heft and feel of a centerfire pistol, which is exactly what makes it such a useful training tool. You get real DA/SA trigger practice, a decocker to work with, and .22 LR ammo costs that let you stay at the range twice as long.
The 4.9-inch barrel comes threaded from the factory, and GSG includes a 1/2×28 adapter in the box, so standard muzzle devices thread on without hunting down extra parts. The fixed-barrel blowback design is a quiet bonus here too. Because the barrel does not tilt or move during cycling, the FireFly tends to print consistent groups, and the adjustable rear sight lets you dial your point of impact to match whatever load you settle on.
Like most blowback rimfire pistols, this one runs happiest on high-velocity .22 LR. GSG recommends 36 to 40 grain loads rated at 1250 fps or faster, so grab a few boxes of quality high-velocity ammo and the FireFly will reward you with smooth range sessions. It is a smart habit with any semi-auto .22 anyway.
Between the 13+1 capacity, the rail for a light or laser, the ambidextrous slide-mounted safety, and that subdued gray finish over black polymer grips, this is a lot of pistol for a rimfire. Whether you are introducing someone new to handguns, keeping your DA/SA skills sharp on a budget, or just want a fun gun that does not burn through your ammo shelf, the FireFly checks the boxes. The FireFly's factory muzzle threads are metric, but this model ships with a 1/2×28 adapter in the box. That means standard American muzzle devices and rimfire suppressors will attach without buying anything extra. Just install the adapter over the factory threads and you are set.
GSG recommends high-velocity .22 LR in the 36 to 40 grain range with a minimum velocity of 1250 fps. Loads like CCI Mini-Mags and Aguila high-velocity are popular choices that cycle blowback rimfire pistols reliably. Stick with quality high-velocity ammo and give the pistol a good cleaning out of the box, since these ship packed in grease.
It is a true DA/SA pistol. The first shot can be fired double action with a longer, heavier pull, and follow-up shots break in lighter single action. A decocker lets you safely lower the hammer, which makes it a great low-cost trainer for anyone running a DA/SA centerfire pistol.
This model ships with one 13-round magazine, giving you a 13+1 total capacity. That is a step up from the 10-round mags found on earlier FireFly versions. Spare magazines are available through ATI and most parts retailers if you want to load up before range day.
