There are plenty of AK pattern rifles floating around, but few come out of a factory with the pedigree Zastava brings to the table. The ZPAPM70 is built in Serbia on the same tooling philosophy that produced military M70 rifles by the millions, and it shows in the details. The receiver is stamped from 1.5mm steel with a bulged front trunnion, noticeably beefier than the 1mm receivers common on budget AKs, which keeps things tight and rigid through heavy use. Up front you get a 16.3 inch cold hammer forged, chrome-lined barrel that handles corrosive surplus ammo and long range sessions without complaint.
This particular ZPAPM70 skips the classic wood in favor of practical polymer. The Hogue rubber overmolded handguard gives you a grippy, comfortable hold even when the gun heats up, and it accepts three included Picatinny rail sections for lights or other accessories. The TangoDown-style pistol grip has internal storage for batteries or small spares, and the rear stock adjusts to four length of pull positions with a seven position cheek riser. That riser matters more than you might think, since it lets you get a proper cheek weld whether you are running the adjustable iron sights or an optic on the side rail mount.
Zastava added a bolt hold-open notch on the safety selector, a small feature that makes range work and cleaning noticeably easier. The bolt carrier group is hard nickel-moly steel for corrosion resistance, and the fire control group comes matched and heat treated from the factory. At 7.9 pounds with a 35 inch overall length, it carries the familiar AK heft without feeling like a boat anchor.
Chambered in 7.62×39, this rifle feeds on one of the most affordable and widely available centerfire cartridges out there, making it a natural pick for plinking, training, hog hunting, or home defense duty. It ships with one 30 round magazine, so you are ready to hit the range the day it comes home.
The big one is the 1.5mm stamped receiver paired with a bulged front trunnion, which is thicker and stronger than the 1mm receivers found on most AKM pattern rifles. Add in the cold hammer forged chrome-lined barrel and factory matched fire control group, and you have a rifle built closer to military spec than most of the competition. It comes from the same Serbian factory that has been producing M70 rifles for armies around the world for decades.
Yes. This rifle includes a side rail mount on the left of the receiver, which is the traditional AK method for attaching optics using a side mount adapter. The adjustable cheek riser on the stock is a big help here, since it lets you raise your head position to line up properly behind a red dot or scope.
It is. The polymer stock adjusts to four length of pull positions, so you can fit it to your build or shooting stance, and the cheek riser has seven height settings. That combination makes it easy to get comfortable whether you are running irons or glass.
That is exactly what it was built for. The chrome-lined, cold hammer forged barrel and rugged gas system handle steel-cased, lacquered, and surplus 7.62×39 without fuss. Just clean it promptly after shooting corrosive surplus and the chrome lining will keep the bore in good shape for a very long time.
