It threads on in seconds, covers the muzzle completely, and keeps dirt, dings, and debris away from the threads until you are ready to mount something again.
Yankee Hill Machine has been machining suppressors, mounts, and muzzle devices in the USA for decades, and that same shop turns out these protectors. It is made from steel rather than aluminum, so it shrugs off the kind of abuse a rifle sees getting hauled in and out of trucks and cases. The plated matte black finish matches most barrel finishes, and the .730 inch outer diameter sits nice and flush on a standard profile .22 or 5.56 barrel instead of looking like an afterthought. At roughly half an ounce, you will forget it is even there.
The 1/2×28 thread pitch is the most common threading out there for AR-15s in 5.56 and .223, along with the vast majority of threaded .22 LR rifles and pistols. If your barrel wears that pitch and a standard profile, this is the one you want. YHM also makes versions for bull barrels and other calibers, so double check your barrel diameter and thread pitch before ordering. Knurling around the body gives your fingers enough grip to snug it down and pull it back off without tools.

If your AR-15 barrel has standard 1/2×28 muzzle threads, which nearly all 5.56 and .223 barrels do, it will thread right on. Its .730 inch outer diameter is sized to sit flush with a standard profile barrel. If you are running a heavier bull barrel, YHM makes a larger diameter version that will look more proportional.
Yes. Most threaded .22 LR rifles and pistols use the same 1/2×28 thread pitch, so this protector fits them just fine. Keep in mind that on skinny rimfire barrels the .730 inch diameter may stick out slightly past the barrel profile, which is purely cosmetic and does not affect function.
No washer or timing is needed since a thread protector does not have to index in any particular position. Just spin it on hand tight using the knurled body for grip. A drop of light oil on the threads is a good habit and makes removal easier down the road.
It is machined from steel with a plated matte black finish, which makes it noticeably more durable than the aluminum protectors that ship with a lot of factory rifles. Steel resists dings and thread wear better over repeated on and off cycles. It still only weighs about half an ounce, so it adds nothing noticeable to the rifle.
