Description

Battle Arms Development built the Workhorse to be the kind of rail that just gets out of the way and lets your rifle do its job. At only 4 inches, this is the shortest length in the lineup, which makes it a natural fit for pistol-length builds and ultra-compact carbines where you want to keep things tucked in and lightweight. It's machined from 6061-T6 aluminum and wears a Type 3 black hardcoat anodized finish, so it shrugs off heat, wear, and the general abuse that comes with regular range time.

What Sets the Workhorse 4" Rail Apart

The free float design is the real story here. Because the handguard mounts off the barrel nut and never touches the barrel or gas block, there are no pressure points working against your barrel harmonics. That translates to more consistent shot-to-shot behavior and a genuine bump in accuracy over a drop-in polymer forend. The one-piece aluminum construction also holds up to sustained fire far better than a two-piece polymer setup, so your zero and your mounted gear stay put.

Slim Profile and Smart Weight Savings

The Workhorse carries M-LOK slots at the 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions for lights, grips, bipods, and slings, with skeletonized cuts everywhere the M-LOK isn't so you're not hauling around metal you don't need. Up top, Battle Arms kept a full 1913 MIL-SPEC Picatinny rail and notch-cut it to line up with the upper receiver for a continuous optics platform. The 1.36 inch internal diameter leaves plenty of room around low-profile gas blocks and many suppressor-ready setups.

Getting the Workhorse Mounted

Installation is a direct-fit swap using the included barrel nut, and the barrel nut doesn't require timing to the gas tube, which takes a lot of the fuss out of a home build. You'll want an upper vise block, an armorer's wrench, and a torque wrench to do it right. Battle Arms designs, machines, and tests these in the USA and backs them with a limited lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects.

Frequently Asked Questions

What length build is the Workhorse 4" handguard best for?

The 4 inch is the shortest option in the Workhorse lineup, which makes it a great match for pistol-length and short-barreled builds where you want a slim, tucked-in profile. It gives you enough real estate to run a light or a hand stop without adding much weight up front. If you need more rail for a bipod or vertical grip, Battle Arms offers the Workhorse in 6.7, 9.5, 13, and 15 inch versions as well.

Does the Workhorse handguard come with a barrel nut?

Yes, the barrel nut and mounting hardware are included in the box. One nice detail is that the barrel nut does not need to be timed to the gas tube, so you can torque it to spec without wrestling with alignment. You will still need an upper vise block, an armorer's wrench, and a torque wrench to install it properly.

Will a low-profile gas block fit under the Workhorse 4" rail?

The 1.36 inch internal diameter is built to clear most low-profile gas blocks with room to spare. Set-screw or clamp-style low-profile blocks are the way to go here since a standard front sight base won't fit under a free float rail. It also leaves clearance for many suppressor-ready barrel configurations.

How does a free float rail like the Workhorse improve accuracy?

A free float design mounts entirely off the barrel nut, so the handguard never contacts the barrel or gas block. That removes the pressure points that can throw off barrel harmonics, which helps deliver more consistent shot placement. It also means leaning on a barricade or bipod won't flex your point of impact the way a drop-in handguard can.
