Most kids learning to shoot with a full-size shotgun end up wrestling the gun instead of learning to point it. Winchester built the SXP Youth Field to fix that. The 12-inch length of pull brings the weight of the gun in close to the body, and the 18-inch barrel keeps the balance point where a smaller frame can manage it. At 5 pounds 14 ounces and just 36.5 inches overall, this 20 gauge carries easily on a long walk through the dove field and mounts fast when a bird flushes.
Nothing was watered down here. You get the same rotary bolt with four locking lugs, dual steel action bars, and the famously quick pump stroke that made the Super X Pump popular in the first place. The receiver is lightweight aluminum alloy in matte black, and the chamber and bore are hard chrome plated for durability and easy cleanup after a wet morning in the blind. The barrel is back-bored for better patterns and topped with a vent rib and brass bead front sight that picks up quickly in low light. A drop-out trigger group makes maintenance simple, and the crossbolt safety sits right at the front of the trigger guard where small hands can reach it.
The Grade I walnut stock with satin finish and laser-cut checkering gives this gun a classic look that plastic-stocked starter guns just can't match. The 3-inch chamber and included Invector-Plus choke tubes in Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder cover everything from clays to squirrels to late-season pheasant. The Inflex recoil pad directs recoil down and away from the cheek, which goes a long way toward keeping a new shooter comfortable and confident. Winchester also includes length of pull spacers, so the stock can grow with the kid. Between the mild-mannered 20 gauge chambering, the trim dimensions, and the proven SXP action, this is the kind of first shotgun that sticks around in the family for decades.
The 12-inch length of pull is about 2 inches shorter than a standard adult stock, which suits most kids roughly 8 to 14 years old, plus many smaller-framed adults. Winchester includes stock spacers so you can lengthen the pull as the shooter grows. It's one of the few youth guns designed to be adjusted upward rather than replaced.
Yes, it has a 3-inch chamber, so it handles both 2.75-inch and 3-inch 20 gauge loads. The tube magazine holds five 2.75-inch shells. For a new shooter, standard 2.75-inch target and field loads are the comfortable place to start, with 3-inch magnums available once they're ready for waterfowl or turkey.
Not for a young hunter. The shorter barrel shifts weight back toward the body, so kids spend less energy holding the gun up and more on their swing and follow-through. With the vent rib, back-bored bore, and three Invector-Plus chokes included, it patterns well for dove, quail, rabbits, and clays. Winchester also offers this model with a longer barrel if you prefer a bit more sight plane.
It ships with three flush-fit Invector-Plus tubes: Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder, plus a wrench for swapping them. That trio covers most hunting and clay situations right out of the box. Since it uses the Invector-Plus system, there's a huge aftermarket of extended and specialty chokes if you want to add more later.
