There is a reason so many duck hunters keep coming back to a pump gun. Semi-autos can get finicky when they are caked in marsh mud and freezing rain, but a well-built pump just keeps running. The Winchester SXP Waterfowl Hunter leans into that reputation and adds real speed to it. The inertia-assisted rotary bolt starts the action rearward the instant you fire, so the forearm practically cycles itself, and dual steel slide bars keep everything tracking straight with no twist or bind. Four locking lugs give the bolt a solid, confident lockup with heavy 3 inch waterfowl loads.
This version wears full-coverage Woodland camo across the composite stock, forearm, aluminum alloy receiver, and barrel. It is a throwback pattern that blends surprisingly well in flooded timber, cattails, and cut grain fields. Underneath the camo, the chamber and bore are hard chrome plated to fight corrosion, stand up to steel shot, and make cleanup at the end of a wet hunt a lot less painful. Texturing on the grip and forend keeps your hands planted when everything is soaked, and sling swivel studs are already in place for the long walk in.
The 26 inch barrel is back-bored for improved patterns and topped with a vent rib and TruGlo fiber optic front sight that glows in the gray light of legal shooting time. Three Invector-Plus choke tubes come in the box, Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder, so you can tighten up for passing geese or open things up for decoying ducks. Winchester's Inflex recoil pad directs the comb down and away from your face under recoil, which you will appreciate by the third box of heavy steel.
At around 6.75 pounds, the SXP carries easily and swings clean on crossing birds. It is a working duck gun in the best sense, simple, fast, and built to go bang every single time, no matter what the weather is doing.
Yes. This model has a 3 inch chamber, so it runs everything from 2.75 inch target loads up to 3 inch magnum waterfowl loads. The hard chrome plated bore and chamber are built to handle steel, bismuth, and tungsten shot without issue, which matters since non-toxic shot is standard fare for ducks and geese.
It ships with three Invector-Plus tubes: Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder. That covers most duck and goose setups right out of the box. The Invector-Plus system is widely supported, so aftermarket waterfowl chokes from companies like Carlson's and Patternmaster are easy to find if you want to fine-tune your patterns.
Winchester calls the SXP the fastest pump action out there, and there is substance behind the claim. Combined with dual steel action bars that prevent binding, follow-up shots on a second or third bird come very quickly.
It is a right-handed gun with bottom loading and right side ejection, but the crossbolt safety is reversible, which helps lefties run it more comfortably. Plenty of left-handed hunters shoot right-eject pumps without trouble. If ejection direction is a dealbreaker for you, it is worth handling one first.
