There is a reason the SXP has earned the nickname of the world's fastest pump gun. Winchester's inertia-assisted slide action and four-lug rotary bolt let the forearm start cycling almost the instant the shot breaks, so your second and third shots come faster than you would think possible from a pump. When a flock drops into the decoys and you need to swing on a second bird, that speed matters. This Waterfowl Hunter version is chambered for 3.5 inch shells, which means everything from light 2.75 inch practice loads up to full-house goose payloads runs through the same gun.
The whole gun wears Realtree Timber camo from buttstock to muzzle, a pattern that disappears nicely in flooded timber and brushy shorelines. Underneath the camo, the details are what keep this thing running in nasty weather. The chamber and bore are hard chrome plated to shrug off moisture and corrosion, the bolt wears matte black chrome, and the receiver is lightweight aluminum alloy that keeps overall weight right around 7 pounds. The 28 inch vent rib barrel is back-bored for better patterns and topped with a TRUGLO fiber optic front sight that grabs light even at legal shooting time on a gray morning.
Winchester includes three Invector-Plus flush choke tubes, Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder, so you can tighten up for passing geese or open things up for decoying ducks without buying anything extra. The Inflex recoil pad does real work here too, channeling recoil down and away from your cheek, which you will appreciate after a long morning of 3.5 inch magnums. The composite stock has textured grip panels on the forend and pistol grip that stay put with wet gloves, and sling swivel studs come installed so adding a sling is simple.
Capacity is 4+1, the safety is a straightforward crossbolt, and the whole package handles quick thanks to that centered balance the SXP line is known for. For the money, it is tough to find a harder working waterfowl gun.
It runs all three. The 3.5 inch chamber handles everything from light 2.75 inch target loads for offseason practice up to full-power 3.5 inch magnum goose loads. Keep in mind the magazine holds 4 rounds of 2.75 inch shells, and capacity drops slightly with longer shells.
Yes, it is built for it. The back-bored barrel and Invector-Plus choke system are rated for steel, and the gun also handles bismuth, tungsten, and lead loads. As with any shotgun, avoid running steel through the Full choke with larger shot sizes; the Modified tube is the better call for most steel loads.
This is where the gun earns its keep. The chamber and bore are hard chrome plated to fight corrosion, the bolt is protected with matte black chrome, and the composite stock will not swell or crack like wood. A quick wipe down after a soggy hunt goes a long way, but the SXP is genuinely built to take abuse.
