Most pump guns are built to be tools. The Winchester SXP High Grade Field is built to be a tool you enjoy looking at. Winchester took the SXP platform, widely regarded as one of the fastest cycling pump actions ever made, and dressed it up with a high grade Turkish walnut stock in satin varnish, gloss blued metal, and an aluminum alloy receiver engraved with an upland game scene. It has the kind of fit and finish you would expect on a gun costing quite a bit more, without giving up anything on the working end.
The SXP uses an inertia-assisted action with dual steel action bars, so the slide starts moving rearward almost on its own the instant you fire. That translates to quick, bind-free follow-up shots when a second rooster flushes late. The 26-inch back-bored barrel wears a ventilated rib and patterns consistently with the included Invector-Plus choke system, and the chrome-plated chamber and bore shrug off corrosion and clean up fast after a wet morning in the marsh. Chambered for 3-inch shells with a 4+1 capacity, it handles everything from light target loads to stout waterfowl ammo.
Three Invector-Plus choke tubes come in the box, Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder, which covers doves, pheasants, ducks, and a round of clays without buying anything extra. The TruGlo fiber-optic front sight gathers light and pops against gray skies far better than a plain bead. On the back end, Winchester's Inflex recoil pad directs recoil down and away from your cheek, taking the sting out of heavier loads. A reversible crossbolt safety and generous trigger guard opening round things out for left-handed shooters and gloved hands.
At 26 inches, this barrel length swings lively in tight cover and still reaches out on passing birds, making it the do-everything choice in the lineup. If you want one pump gun that handles serious hunting duty and still draws compliments at the club, this one earns its spot in the safe.
This model has a 3-inch chamber, so it runs both 2 3/4-inch and 3-inch 12 gauge shells. That covers light target loads at the clays range all the way up to heavier waterfowl and pheasant loads. Capacity is 4+1 with 2 3/4-inch shells.
Mechanically they share the same fast inertia-assisted pump action, back-bored barrel, and Invector-Plus choke system. The High Grade version upgrades to genuine high grade Turkish walnut with a satin varnish, gloss blued metal, an engraved upland game scene on the receiver, and a TruGlo fiber-optic front sight instead of a plain brass bead. It is the dressed-up version of a proven workhorse.
It ships with three Invector-Plus choke tubes: Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder. That trio covers most upland, waterfowl, and clay target situations right out of the box. The Invector-Plus pattern is shared with Browning, so aftermarket options are easy to find if you want a specialty tube later.
It is a great middle-ground length. The 26-inch barrel keeps the gun quick handling in thick cover and brushy fence lines while still giving you a smooth, steady swing on longer crossing shots. Paired with the vent rib and fiber-optic front sight, it points naturally on fast-flushing birds.
