There is a reason the Wildcat has become one of the most talked about rimfire autoloaders of the last several years, and this VSX SR version might be the best looking one yet. Winchester wrapped the polymer stock in TrueTimber VSX camo, finished the metalwork in a tough Tungsten Perma-Cote, and kept the whole rifle right around 4 pounds. That kind of weight is a big deal when you are covering ground after squirrels or handing a rifle to a newer shooter who does not want to wrestle with something heavy.
The SR in the name means the 16.5 inch button-rifled barrel comes threaded 1/2×28 with a knurled thread protector, so a rimfire can or muzzle device spins right on with no gunsmith trip required. The recessed target crown protects your accuracy, and the 1 in 16 twist handles standard and high velocity .22 LR without fuss. Feed it subsonics with a can attached and it gets remarkably quiet.
Unlike most .22 autoloaders, the Wildcat is striker fired rather than hammer fired, which gives it a quicker locktime and a lighter, cleaner trigger pull than you would expect at this level. The whole lower receiver assembly, trigger group and all, pops out with the push of a single button for cleaning. No punches, no tiny pins rolling across the bench. Controls are ambidextrous too, with a reversible safety and mag release that works from either side.
The included 10 round rotary magazine loads easily and locks the bolt open after the last shot, so you always know when you are empty. Even better, the Wildcat accepts aftermarket Ruger 10/22 magazines, which means spare mags are cheap and everywhere. Add the integral Picatinny top rail for optics, a rail section under the forearm for a light or bipod, sling eyelets front and rear, and adjustable ghost ring sights, and you have a rimfire that is ready for plinking, small game, or training duty the day you bring it home.
Yes, and that is one of its best features. It ships with Winchester's 10 round rotary magazine, which includes a last-round bolt hold open, but it also runs aftermarket 10/22 pattern mags. That gives you access to one of the most affordable and widely available magazine ecosystems in the rimfire world.
SR stands for suppressor ready. The 16.5 inch barrel comes factory threaded in the standard 1/2×28 pattern with a knurled thread protector installed, so most rimfire suppressors and muzzle devices attach directly. For the quietest suppressed shooting, pair it with subsonic .22 LR ammo.
Much easier than most. Pressing a single button drops the entire lower receiver assembly, including the trigger group and bolt, out of the rifle with no tools. You also get rear barrel access, so you can clean from the chamber end and avoid dragging a rod through the muzzle crown.
Absolutely. The upper receiver has an integral Picatinny rail molded right in and is also drilled and tapped, so mounting a red dot or rimfire scope is straightforward. If you keep it irons only, the adjustable ghost ring rear and ramped post front make for quick, easy aiming.
