There is no shortage of semi-auto .22s out there, but the Wildcat SR does a few things the old standbys never figured out. Winchester built this one around a striker-fired action instead of a hammer, which gives you a quicker locktime and a lighter, cleaner trigger pull than most rimfires in its class. Add a hemispherical firing pin for more consistent rim strikes and you get a rifle that runs bulk ammo with fewer hiccups than you might expect at this weight and size.
The SR in the name means the 16.5 inch precision button-rifled barrel comes threaded 1/2×28 from the factory, with a knurled thread protector installed for the days you run it bare. Screw on a can and this thing becomes a genuinely quiet backyard and small game rig, especially with subsonic loads. Sights are handled by a ramped post up front and an adjustable ghost ring in the rear, which is faster to pick up than traditional rimfire notch sights. If you want glass, the integral Picatinny rail on the polymer receiver takes care of that.
At roughly four pounds with the Forged Carbon Gray hydrographic stock and gray Perma-Cote barrel finish, this rifle disappears on a sling. The skeletonized polymer stock has a steep grip angle that puts your finger right where it should be on the trigger, and the controls, including the magazine release, work from either side. The 10-round rotary magazine loads easily and locks the bolt open on the last round, and if you have a drawer full of 10/22 pattern mags, those drop right in too.
