Winchester likes to call it the world's fastest pump action, and while that's their line, plenty of folks who've swapped over from other pumps will back up how slick and fast the SXP runs once it breaks in. Pair that with a rotary bolt, dual steel action bars, and a drop-out trigger group that makes cleanup painless, and you've got a working gun that earns its keep.
The Black Shadow version is the no-frills workhorse of the SXP line. The matte black barrel and receiver keep glare down so you're not flashing sunlight at incoming birds, and the synthetic stock with textured grip panels shrugs off rain, mud, and boat rides that would beat up a wood gun. The 3-inch chamber handles both 2.75 and 3-inch shells, and the chrome-plated chamber and bore stand up to steel, bismuth, tungsten, and lead loads without complaint. An Inflex recoil pad on the back end takes real bite out of heavier magnum loads too.
The 28-inch back-bored vent rib barrel gives you a smooth, even swing on crossing birds and clays, with a brass bead up front for a clean sight picture. Back-boring opens the bore slightly for better pattern consistency and a touch less felt recoil, and the included Invector-Plus choke set (Full, Modified, Improved Cylinder) lets you tune your pattern for everything from tight turkey and pass shooting work to close-flushing upland birds. With 4+1 capacity, a crossbolt safety, and a lightweight alloy receiver that keeps the balance lively, this is the kind of pump gun you can hand a new hunter or toss in the truck as a do-it-all backup and never worry about it.
The 3-inch chamber accepts both 2.75 and 3-inch factory shells, and the chrome-plated chamber and bore are rated for steel, bismuth, tungsten, and lead shot. That makes it a legitimate all-season gun, from lead target loads at the range to steel waterfowl loads in the marsh. If you want 3.5-inch capability, look at the SXP Waterfowl Hunter models instead.
The inertia-assisted action gives the slide a rearward push after firing, so the pump stroke feels lighter and quicker than most traditional pumps. Winchester claims three shots in half a second, and with a little break-in and practice the action does run remarkably fast. New owners often mention it takes a few boxes of shells to get the timing down, then it becomes second nature.
It uses the Invector-Plus choke system and ships with Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder tubes. Invector-Plus is a common thread pattern shared with Browning shotguns, so aftermarket options from Carlson's, Briley, and others are easy to find if you want a specialty turkey or waterfowl tube.
It's one of the better picks in the budget pump category. The controls are simple, the action is smooth, and the synthetic stock takes abuse without needing babying. Between hunting, clays, and general field use, it covers a lot of ground for someone buying their first 12 gauge, and the drop-out trigger group makes cleaning straightforward for newer gun owners.
