Lefties have spent years running right-handed autoloaders and just living with ejection ports throwing hulls across their face. Winchester fixed that with this one. The left-hand SX4 Waterfowl Hunter is a true mirror-image build, so the port, charging handle, and controls all sit where a southpaw wants them. No workarounds, no compromises, just a gas gun that finally fits.
Under the camo, this is the same Active Valve gas system that made the SX2 and SX3 favorites in duck blinds for two decades. It self-regulates to cycle a wide spread of loads, and with a 3.5 inch chamber you can run everything from 2.75 inch practice shells to full-house magnum steel without touching a thing. The gas operation also soaks up a good chunk of recoil, and the Inflex recoil pad takes care of the rest, which matters a lot by the third box of heavy waterfowl loads. Oversized controls, including a larger bolt handle, bolt release, and safety button, are easy to run with cold or gloved hands, which is exactly when you need them to work.
The 28 inch vent rib barrel gives you a smooth swing on passing birds, and the TruGlo fiber optic front sight picks up fast in the gray light of legal shooting time. Full-coverage Realtree Max-7 camo covers the synthetic stock, forearm, and aluminum alloy receiver, keeping the whole gun hidden from birds circling overhead. Max-7 is Realtree's purpose-built marshland pattern, blending cattails, grasses, and mud tones that disappear in flooded timber and field edges alike.
Winchester includes three Invector-Plus choke tubes, Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder, so you can pattern your load and match your setup from decoying birds to longer passing shots. At roughly seven pounds, it carries well on long walks into the blind and swings naturally once the birds commit. If you shoot from the left shoulder and waterfowl is your thing, this is the SX4 you have been waiting on.
It's a true mirror-image left-hand build. The ejection port, charging handle, and bolt release are all on the left side, so spent hulls eject away from your face and the controls fall naturally under your hands. This was the first time Winchester offered the SX4 Waterfowl Hunter in a dedicated lefty configuration.
With a 3.5 inch chamber and the Active Valve gas system, it handles 2.75, 3, and 3.5 inch shells. The gas system self-adjusts to the load, so it cycles lighter field loads and heavy magnum steel without any manual tweaking. Like most gas guns, very light target loads may need a short break-in period before they run at their smoothest.
It ships with three Invector-Plus flush-mount chokes: Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder. That covers everything from tight passing shots to close decoying birds. The Invector-Plus system is widely supported, so aftermarket waterfowl-specific chokes are easy to find if you want to fine-tune your pattern.
Quite well for a roughly seven pound gun. The Active Valve gas system bleeds off a significant amount of recoil energy before it ever reaches your shoulder, and the Inflex recoil pad softens what's left. Most folks find 3 inch steel very manageable for a full day in the blind.
