Winchester Super-X turkey loads have been a field-proven choice for decades, and the 3-inch magnum load delivers solid performance at a reasonable price point. The 1-7/8 oz payload of number 5 shot packs about 317 pellets per shell, giving you enough density to work out to typical hunting distances when paired with a full or turkey choke.
The copper plating on each pellet keeps them harder and rounder than plain lead shot, which means better ballistics and less flattening as they pass through your gun's choke. The Grex buffering system inside the shell protects those pellets from deforming on their way down the bore, so your pattern stays tight instead of opening up prematurely. This combination works well with specialized turkey chokes and keeps patterns consistent from shot to shot.
The 1210 fps muzzle velocity is standard for 3-inch turkey loads and gives you reliable range without excessive recoil compared to some heavier options. The custom powder blend Winchester uses helps maintain consistent performance across different gun lengths and choke combinations. You'll get good knockdown at distances most turkey hunters actually shoot, and the payload is substantial enough that you're not fighting against short-range limitations.
Number 5 shot is widely recommended for 12-gauge turkey hunting because it strikes a balance between range and pattern density. Paired with the right choke, these loads will produce solid patterns out to 40 yards or beyond, depending on your gun's characteristics. The copper plating reduces fouling in your barrel, so if you're running multiple shots through your gun during hunting season, you'll have an easier time keeping things clean.
Number 5 shot offers a good balance between range and pattern density for turkey hunting. The Winchester Super-X load's 1-7/8 oz payload gives you about 317 pellets per shell, which is solid for typical hunting distances. Some hunters prefer #4 for longer range or #6 for tighter patterns at closer distances, but #5 is widely considered the sweet spot.
Yes, the Grex buffering system is specifically designed to help pellets maintain their shape as they pass through full and extra-full turkey chokes. The copper plating also aids in this, so you should see good, consistent patterns. Pattern your specific gun and choke combination before season to know exactly what to expect.
The 1210 fps muzzle velocity is standard for 3-inch magnum turkey loads and provides good range and knockdown without excessive felt recoil. Some loads run faster at 1250+ fps or slower at 1160 fps, but 1210 fps is right in the reliable middle ground that most turkey guns handle well.
The Winchester Super-X Turkey load will work in any 12-gauge shotgun that's chambered for 3-inch shells, whether you're running a pump, semi-auto, or over-under. The standard powder charge and shell dimensions make it compatible with typical hunting shotguns. Just make sure your gun is clearly marked for 3-inch shells.
