Winchester Super-X has been the go-to choice for upland hunters since 1922, and their 28 gauge offering lives up to that reputation. These high brass shells pack 3/4 ounce of #6 lead shot at 1295 fps, giving you the energy you need to cleanly take quail, grouse, dove, and other small game without the unnecessary recoil or weight of larger gauges.
The 28 gauge sits in a sweet spot between finesse and effectiveness. It's light enough to carry all day without wearing you out, points quickly through brush, and delivers tight, consistent patterns that upland birds won't forgive. The #6 shot size is the classic choice for most upland species, offering a good balance between pellet count and per-pellet energy. These shells perform well inside 30 yards, which is where most upland hunting actually happens.
Each round features a one-piece hinged wad designed to reduce felt recoil while keeping your patterns tight downrange. Winchester uses a 209 primer for reliable ignition, clean-burning powder, and brass components that'll feed smoothly and extract cleanly. High brass cases hold their shape and pressure well. This isn't budget ammunition that cuts corners. Super-X is built with the precision manufacturing and quality control Winchester has been known for.
At 1295 fps, this isn't a slow-moving poke. The velocity is strong enough for pattern density and energy transfer, but you won't feel beaten up after a full day in the field. That matters when you're walking rough terrain, mounting your gun repeatedly on flushing birds, and need to stay fresh for the next covey or single.
#6 shot works well for quail, grouse, woodcock, dove, squirrel, and rabbit. It provides plenty of pellets for consistent patterns while maintaining enough energy at upland distances. Most hunters find #6 to be the all-around choice for small upland game inside 30 yards where ethics and effectiveness overlap.
Yes. The 3/4 ounce payload at 1295 fps is designed as a reduced-recoil load, especially for the 28 gauge platform. You'll feel significantly less kick than 12 or 20 gauge equivalents, making it easier to stay on target and shoot comfortably all day. The hinged wad also helps dampen felt recoil.
Winchester Super-X has been manufactured since 1922 with a reputation for consistent construction and reliable ignition. These shells use quality components, clean-burning powder, and a standard 209 primer. Across multiple sources and user reports, this load performs dependably in the field with tight patterns and clean function.
Most modern 28 gauge shotguns handle these shells without issue. However, if you're shooting a vintage gun, especially a side-by-side, verify that your specific gun is proofed for modern ammunition. Some older guns have tighter chambers or may not handle high brass loads well. Always check your shotgun's chamber length and condition first.
