Turkey hunting with a 20 gauge demands ammunition that doesn't compromise. The Winchester Double X High Velocity Turkey Load is built specifically for that job. This shell carries a full 1-5/16 ounce payload of copper-plated lead shot sized at #4, loaded to a scorching 1,200 feet per second. That velocity and payload combination makes for a serious turkey load that'll reach out and deliver results when your bird is at reasonable range.
The real trick to this load is what's protecting the shot on its way downrange. Grex buffering reduces the deformation that happens when pellets slam into each other during the firing process, which means tighter, more consistent patterns. That consistency matters when you're setting up on a gobbler that might give you one good opportunity. Winchester backs this up with custom-blended powders that ensure you get the same velocity and payload performance from every shell in the box.
Number 4 shot sits in that sweet spot for turkey hunting with a 20 gauge. It's large enough to maintain velocity and impact out to 35-40 yards, but it'll still give you a respectable pellet count in your pattern. This is the load that works best when you've done your job as a hunter and the bird is in the reasonable range for a 20 gauge. Each box contains 10 rounds, so you've got enough for a season of hunting without breaking the bank.
Winchester has been making turkey ammunition for generations, and the Double X line carries that legacy. Generations of turkey hunters have relied on these loads because they pattern predictably and perform when it counts. The copper plating ensures consistent ballistics throughout the box, and that reliability matters when you're out there in the woods.
Number 4 shot is a solid choice for 20 gauge turkey hunting when you're working birds inside 35-40 yards. The pellet size maintains velocity and penetration at distance while still giving you a reasonable number of pellets in your pattern. Your success depends more on gun and choke choice than the specific shot size, so pattern your gun with these loads before heading to the field.
The Grex buffering protects the shot pellets from deforming when they're fired and collide inside the barrel. When pellets stay round instead of flattening, they hold their velocity better and group more consistently downrange. That means tighter patterns, which is exactly what you need when hunting turkey with a smaller gauge like the 20.
These are 3-inch shells, so they'll work in any 20 gauge shotgun that's rated for 3-inch loads. Check your gun's chamber markings to confirm it'll handle 3-inch ammunition. If your gun is chambered for 2-3/4 inch only, you'll need shells that match that specification.
With proper choke selection and a well-patterned gun, you can expect effective kills inside 35-40 yards. The 20 gauge naturally has a shorter effective range than a 12 gauge, so successful turkey hunting with a 20 requires you to do your job getting close to the bird and making a clean, well-placed shot.
