Winchester built the Double X line specifically for turkey hunters who need reliable, hardworking ammunition season after season. This 12-gauge load pairs a 1-3/4 ounce payload of #5 copper-plated shot with a muzzle velocity of 1300 feet per second, giving you the range and hitting power to take birds at typical turkey distances.
The key to the Double X pattern is the copper-plated shot combined with Grex buffering. Copper plating keeps pellets harder as they accelerate through the barrel, which means they stay round and hit harder downrange. The Grex buffering system protects those pellets from flattening out during acceleration, so your pattern stays dense and consistent. Winchester also uses custom blended powders that deliver a consistent high-velocity payload every time you pull the trigger.
Number 5 shot strikes a solid balance for turkey hunting. You get enough pellets in your pattern for forgiving aim, while each pellet carries the weight needed for reliable penetration on tough birds. Experienced turkey hunters lean toward #5 when they want good range combined with dependable knockdown, which is why it's remained a trusted choice across decades of hunting.
Each box holds 10 rounds, meaning you get enough ammunition for a season without breaking the bank on premium TSS loads. Whether you're working fields or tight timber, the combination of velocity and pattern density gives you what you need to finish the job cleanly when the opportunity comes.
Number 5 shot gives you more pellets in the pattern with slightly less knockdown per pellet, while #4 offers fewer but heavier pellets. Number 5 is often favored by hunters who value pattern density and forgiveness on aim at typical turkey ranges. It's the more versatile choice if you're hunting turkeys at varying distances and setups.
Very important. Every shotgun and choke combination patterns differently, even with the same ammunition. Spend time at the pattern board with your gun and choke setup before season opens. This shows you exactly where your load shoots and helps confirm you'll hit the vitals when the moment comes.
Grex buffering protects pellets from deforming during acceleration through the barrel. When pellets stay round instead of flattening out, they maintain velocity and energy downrange. This means tighter, more consistent patterns and better performance, especially when using tight turkey chokes that put pressure on the shot string.
Yes. The combination of 1300 fps velocity and the copper-plated #5 shot load makes it suitable for typical turkey hunting distances in both seasons. It's been trusted by generations of hunters and remains a practical choice for those who want reliable, proven ammunition without premium price tags.
