Since 1965, Winchester AA Target loads have set the standard for clay target performance and consistency. The 28 gauge has long been the favorite of clay shooters who appreciate light recoil paired with pattern reliability, and this #8 shot load is built specifically for that balance.
AA loads are engineered with hard-alloy shot and Winchester's proprietary AA wad technology, which reduces felt recoil while tightening your pattern. The hull uses high-strength brass construction that handles repeated shooting and holds up well through reloading cycles. Clean-burning powder with a reliable primer ensures you get consistent velocity and ignition shell after shell, so you can focus on your technique rather than worrying about ammunition performance.
Whether you're running trap, skeet, or sporting clays, the 3/4 oz payload at 1200 fps is the sweet spot for competitive work and recreational shooting. The #8 shot size delivers excellent pellet count and pattern density without overkill, particularly effective at the ranges typical of clay target competition. Many shooters prefer #8 for trap and sporting clays where pattern consistency matters.
The AA design philosophy focuses on what makes rounds repeatable. You'll notice tight clustering downrange and minimal flyers, which means your groups stay dense and predictable. The reduced recoil from the AA wad means you can shoot longer practice sessions without fatigue, helping you stay sharp for competition day.
#8 shot gives you fewer but slightly larger pellets, making it ideal for trap and sporting clays where you need denser patterns at moderate distances. #9 shot produces more pellets in the same payload, preferred for skeet where tighter, closer-range patterns work best. Winchester offers both to match your specific discipline and shooting style.
Yes. The high-strength brass hull and quality construction of AA loads make them excellent for reloading. Many competitive shooters reload AA hulls multiple times, which is one reason these shells are popular with serious clay target competitors. The consistent brass quality means reliable performance through multiple reload cycles.
The AA wad is engineered to cushion the shot charge during acceleration down the barrel, which absorbs some energy that would otherwise transfer to your shoulder. This reduces felt recoil compared to standard wads, allowing you to shoot longer and stay more comfortable, especially during full days of practice or competition.
The 28 gauge offers a balanced platform that's lighter and has less recoil than 12 or 20 gauge, yet still puts enough lead downrange for competitive shooting. It's become the gauge of choice for shooters who value smooth handling and reduced fatigue over extended practice sessions, while maintaining the pattern density needed for clay target success.
