Some rifles just have presence, and this one has it in spades. The Winchester Model 1873 Short Rifle in .45 Colt takes the most famous lever gun ever made and dresses it up right, with a color case hardened receiver, crescent buttplate, lever, forend cap, and loading gate that all carry those swirling blues and golds you only get from real case coloring. Set against the brushed polish blued 20 inch round barrel and a Grade II/III satin oiled walnut stock, this is the kind of rifle people stop to look at when you pull it out of the case at the range.
The original 1873 earned its reputation because it chambered the same cartridges as the revolvers of the day, and that logic still holds up. Running .45 Colt through a rifle length barrel gives you a soft shooting, quick handling gun that pairs perfectly with a single action wheelgun. The full length magazine tube holds 10 rounds, the toggle link action cycles with that slick, distinctive feel the 73 is known for, and at 39 inches overall with a 20 inch barrel, it carries and swings easier than the longer sporter versions. Cowboy action competitors gravitate to this setup for good reason, and it makes a fine woods gun or ranch rifle too.
Up top you get a semi-buckhorn rear sight and a Marble Arms gold bead front, the traditional setup that just looks right on a rifle like this. The rear tang comes drilled and tapped if you want to add a tang mounted peep sight later, which a lot of folks do for competition or aging eyes. Inside, the brass cartridge lifter and steel loading gate keep everything true to the original design.
This is a genuine Winchester Repeating Arms Model 1873, not a reproduction of a reproduction. Between the upgraded wood, the case colored steel, and the history behind the roll mark, it is the kind of lever gun that gets passed down rather than traded in.
This is the Color Case Hardened version, model number 534202141. Instead of the all blued receiver on the standard Short Rifle, you get a color case hardened receiver, crescent buttplate, lever, forend cap, and loading gate, plus upgraded Grade II/III walnut instead of Grade I wood. It is the dressier of the two, and the wood figure tends to show noticeably more character.
Yes. The rear tang comes drilled and tapped from the factory for a tang mounted rear sight, though the sight itself is not included. A tang peep is a popular upgrade for cowboy action competition and for anyone who finds buckhorn sights harder to pick up quickly.
This is a genuine Winchester Repeating Arms Model 1873, built to closely match the originals produced from 1873 to 1919 with the addition of an improved safety system. There are plenty of 1873 clones on the market, but this one carries the actual Winchester name and roll mark.
It is one of the most popular picks in the sport. The toggle link action of the 1873 is famously smooth and fast to cycle, and .45 Colt lets you run the same ammo in your rifle and revolvers. The 20 inch barrel and 10 round magazine also keep it quick handling between stages.
