Description

Weatherby has been building shotguns for over five decades, but the SORIX marks a real step forward for the brand. Built in Italy around an inertia-driven action, this 12 gauge runs clean with minimal fuss, and the spring rates were tuned over years of testing to cycle everything from lighter field loads up to heavy 3.5 inch magnums. That kind of range matters when your season starts with early teal and ends with late-season geese.

The SHIFT System Sets the SORIX Apart

Here is the feature that gets people talking. Most semi autos treat left-handed hunters as an afterthought, but the SORIX lets you swap the charging handle over to the left side and reverse the crossbolt safety thanks to a dedicated cut in the receiver. No gunsmith, no special order, just a proper left-handed setup on the same gun your right-handed buddy runs. The rest of the controls follow suit with an oversized bolt release, oversized charging handle, and a generous safety you can find with cold or gloved hands. The receiver also wears an aggressive competition-style cut at the loading port, which makes stuffing shells in a hurry noticeably easier when birds are cupped and coming in.

Built for the Marsh in Shadow Grass

This version wears Mossy Oak Shadow Grass, one of the most trusted waterfowl patterns out there, applied over a synthetic stock with textured grip points and a soft cheekpiece that takes some sting out of heavy loads. The 28 inch stepped barrel carries an LPA fiber optic front sight, and the receiver comes drilled and tapped with 8-40 holes if you want to mount an optic. Cerakote on the metalwork shrugs off the wet, muddy conditions that come standard with duck hunting. Weatherby includes adjustable stock shims so you can dial in cast and drop for a proper fit, plus five Crio Plus choke tubes covering cylinder through full, a wrench, and a carrying case. At 49 inches overall, it swings smooth on crossing birds without feeling like a boat oar in a cramped blind. This is a well-thought-out waterfowl gun from a company that clearly listened to hunters when designing it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Weatherby SORIX really be set up for left-handed use?

Yes, and it is one of the best reasons to pick this gun. The SHIFT System uses a cut on the left side of the receiver that lets you move the charging handle to the left side, and the crossbolt safety can be reversed as well. It gives left-handed hunters a genuine lefty configuration without buying a dedicated left-hand model.

Will the SORIX cycle light target loads or just heavy hunting shells?

Weatherby spent years tuning the spring rates on this inertia system, and the 12 gauge handles a wide spread of ammo, from lighter small game loads up to heavy 3.5 inch magnums. Like most inertia guns, it runs at its best with quality field loads. For the featherweight bargain-bin target stuff, expect the usual inertia-gun break-in period.

What choke tubes does the Weatherby SORIX use?

It uses the Crio Plus choke pattern, the same thread system found on Benelli Crio Plus barrels, so aftermarket options are easy to come by. Five tubes ship with the gun: cylinder, improved cylinder, modified, improved modified, and full, along with a wrench and a carrying case.

Can I mount an optic on this shotgun?

You can. The receiver comes drilled and tapped with 8-40 holes to accept standard mounts, which is handy if you want a red dot for turkey season. Out of the box it comes with an LPA fiber optic front sight that picks up light well in dim, early morning conditions.
