Buying a first shotgun for a young hunter usually means buying a second one a few years later. TriStar solved that problem with the Viper G2 Compact two-stock combo. It arrives with a youth stock already mounted at a 13 inch length of pull, plus a full-size adult stock in the box that stretches it to 14.5 inches. There's also a 2 inch barrel extension that takes the 24 inch barrel out to 26 inches once your shooter is ready for a longer sight plane. Swap the parts as they grow and the gun stays in the family instead of ending up on the trade-in counter.
The Viper G2 runs a gas-operated action that cycles everything from light 2.75 inch target loads to 3 inch magnums out of the chrome-lined chamber. That gas system does double duty here, soaking up a good chunk of recoil, which matters a lot when you're teaching someone new. A rubber recoil pad and the naturally mild 20 gauge round make for a shotgun kids can shoot all afternoon without developing a flinch. At around 6.2 pounds it carries easy in the field too.
The chrome-lined, vent rib barrel wears a matted sight plane and a red fiber optic front sight that picks up fast on birds and clays. It's threaded for Beretta and Benelli Mobil pattern chokes, and TriStar includes improved cylinder, modified, and full tubes with a wrench, covering everything from close-flushing quail to longer passes on doves. The synthetic stock and forend get TriStar's Soft Touch coating for a grippy feel in wet weather, and a shim kit lets you fine-tune cast and drop for a proper fit. A manual E-Z Load magazine cut-off makes unloading quick, the 5+1 tube comes with a removable shot plug, and sling swivel studs are already in place. TriStar backs it all with a five-year warranty, which is solid coverage for a gun that will see plenty of seasons.
The youth stock comes installed from the factory with a 13 inch length of pull, which fits most younger or smaller-framed shooters well. The included adult stock brings it up to 14.5 inches. A shim kit is also in the box so you can adjust cast and drop for a better fit.

It's one of the better setups for the job. The gas action and rubber recoil pad tame the already mild 20 gauge recoil, and the 13 inch youth stock helps smaller shooters mount the gun correctly. When they outgrow it, you swap on the included adult stock and barrel extension instead of buying a new gun.
