Loading a traditional tube-fed shotgun one shell at a time gets old fast, and that's exactly the problem the TriStar KRX Tactical solves. This gas-operated 12 gauge feeds from detachable 5-round box magazines, and TriStar includes two of them, so you can top off with a fresh mag as fast as you would on a carbine. The controls follow the AR pattern too, with a familiar safety, magazine release, and bolt release, so if you've spent time behind a modern rifle, this shotgun will feel like home the first time you shoulder it. The one difference worth knowing is the charging handle, which sits where you'd find it on a conventional semi-auto shotgun rather than at the rear of the receiver.
The 20 inch barrel keeps the whole package at 42.25 inches overall, short enough to move through doorways and hallways without feeling like you're swinging a goose gun. The chamber handles both 2.75 and 3 inch shells, and the chrome-lined barrel and chamber shrug off high round counts and lazy cleaning schedules alike. Up top, a full-length Picatinny rail gives you real estate for a red dot or the included removable carry handle, and the bridge fiber optic front sight gets you on target quickly if you'd rather run it as it comes. A rubber recoil pad takes some bite out of heavier loads, and the gas system soaks up a good chunk of the rest.
Unlike a lot of tactical shotguns with fixed cylinder bores, the KRX uses removable chokes with Beretta/Benelli Mobil threads, and an extended tactical choke comes in the box. That thread pattern is one of the most common out there, so tightening or opening your pattern is cheap and easy. The injection molded synthetic stock and forearm with pistol grip hold up to rough handling, and sling swivel studs come installed. At around 7.25 pounds, it carries easily but has enough heft to stay planted during fast follow-up shots. TriStar backs it with a five-year warranty, which is solid coverage in this price class.
The gas system runs buckshot, slugs, and standard field-grade birdshot without complaint once you've put a few boxes through it to break it in. Like most gas-operated semi-auto shotguns, very light or reduced-recoil loads may not generate enough pressure to cycle the action consistently. Stick with full-power loads and it will run happily on 2.75 or 3 inch shells.
Yes, the full-length Picatinny rail on top of the receiver accepts optics directly. The carry handle that houses the rear sight is removable, so you can pull it off and mount a red dot low on the rail. Plenty of owners run the KRX with a dot and report tight slug groups at defensive distances.
Mostly, yes. The safety, magazine release, and bolt release all follow the AR pattern and sit right where your muscle memory expects them. The main exception is the charging handle, which is located on the bolt like a conventional semi-auto shotgun instead of at the rear of the receiver.
