Traditions put together the A1829 Sight-In Combo Pack to solve exactly that. You get 15 Plinker practice bullets and 15 Smackdown SST hunting bullets, all in .50 caliber, so you can burn the cheaper stuff getting on paper and save the good ones for game.
The Plinker side is a 240 grain, 100% lead hollow point built to be an economical range and sight-in round. What makes them handy for load development is that their point of impact stays virtually unchanged compared to other bullets of equal weight running the same powder charge. That means you can get roughed in on paper with the Plinkers, then swap to the Smackdowns and only need a small final adjustment instead of starting over.
The 15 Smackdown SST bullets are the hunting half. These carry a 250 grain projectile with a tapered copper jacket interlocked around a lead core for controlled expansion, topped with Traditions' proprietary spire point polymer tip that drives expansion on impact. The tip and boat tail design were built with Hornady to perform across the full range of muzzleloading velocities, and the line earned a Field & Stream "Best of the Best" nod for innovative ammo. Both bullet styles come pre-loaded in EZ Load sabots that seat smoothly and give a solid gas seal, with the 3-petal sabot design cutting down on petal overlap for easy loading and consistent groups.
