Description

There are plenty of 1873 pattern revolvers out there, but the Short Stroke Smoke Wagon is one of the few that comes out of the box ready to run a match. Taylor's & Company took their popular Smoke Wagon and gave it a short stroke action, meaning the hammer travels a shorter distance to reach full cock. That might sound like a small detail until you're working through a cowboy action stage and every fraction of a second counts. Pair that with the Taylor tuned trigger, which breaks at roughly 3 pounds after hand polishing of the internals, and you've got one of the smoothest single actions you can buy without sending a gun off to a custom shop.

What Sets the Short Stroke Smoke Wagon Apart

The Smoke Wagon treatment goes beyond the action work. The hammer sits lower than a standard 1873, so your thumb reaches it naturally without breaking your grip. The rear sight channel is widened and matched to an enhanced front blade, which makes picking up your sight picture noticeably quicker than the narrow notch on a traditional Peacemaker clone. Checkered walnut Navy size grips keep the handle slim and controllable, a real plus if you find standard Army grips a bit chunky. The 4.75 inch barrel keeps the whole package handy at about 10.25 inches overall and 2.27 pounds.

A Working Gun That Looks the Part

None of the performance upgrades came at the expense of the classic look. The forged steel frame wears rich case hardened colors, set against a deep blued barrel and cylinder. Chambered in .357 Magnum, the six shot cylinder happily digests light .38 Special loads for practice and competition, then steps up to full house magnums when you want more thump. Whether you're chasing faster stage times or just want a beautifully finished single action that shoots as good as it looks, this one earns its spot in the safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Short Stroke Smoke Wagon shoot .38 Special?

Yes. This model is chambered in .357 Magnum, and like any .357 revolver it safely fires .38 Special ammunition as well. That's a big plus for cowboy action competitors, since light .38 loads are soft shooting and easy on the wallet for high volume practice.

What does the short stroke action do on this Smoke Wagon?

The short stroke action reduces how far the hammer has to travel to reach full cock compared to a standard 1873 single action. That means faster cocking with less thumb movement, which translates directly to quicker follow-up shots. It's an action design exclusive to Taylor's & Company and one of the main reasons this revolver is so popular in competition circles.

Is this revolver ready for cowboy action shooting out of the box?

It is. The action comes Taylor tuned from the factory, with hand polished internals and a trigger pull around 3 pounds, so there's no need for aftermarket action work. Add in the low profile hammer, slim Navy size grips, and the widened sight channel, and it's set up for match use the day you bring it home.

How is the Short Stroke Smoke Wagon different from a standard Smoke Wagon?

Both share the case hardened frame, blued steel, low sitting hammer, and checkered walnut Navy grips. The difference is the action itself. The Short Stroke version shortens the hammer throw for faster cycling, and this Taylor Polished configuration includes additional hand polishing of the internal parts for an even smoother feel.
