There is something special about the 1871-72 Open Top. It gets mistaken for a cap-and-ball conversion all the time, but it was the first Colt revolver built from the ground up to fire a centerfire cartridge, with the loading gate machined right into the frame. Taylor's & Company took that piece of history, handed it to Uberti in Italy, and gave it a twist the originals never had: a 3.5 inch snub barrel that turns a long-barreled frontier sixgun into something quick and compact. They named it after Wild Bill Hickok, and the shortened profile fits the gunfighter theme perfectly.
The fit and finish here is what draws people in at the counter. You get a color case hardened forged steel frame with those swirling blues and browns, a blued round barrel, a blued cylinder dressed up with roll engraving, and an Army-size walnut grip that fills the hand better than the slimmer Navy pattern. Sighting is classic Open Top style, with a blade up front and a fixed notch cut into the rear of the barrel. There is no ejector rod, which keeps the lines clean and true to the design. Overall length runs about 9.3 inches, so it carries and handles far easier than the 7.5 inch originals ever did.
The .38 Special chambering is a smart match for this gun. Recoil is soft, ammo is on every shelf, and the cartridge has a well-earned reputation for accuracy out of short barrels. The single action lockwork is simple and satisfying, and the six-shot cylinder loads through the frame-mounted gate just like the originals. No, and neither was the original it replicates. The 1871-72 Colt Open Top looks like a percussion conversion, but it was built as an all-new design made specifically for centerfire cartridges, with the loading gate built into the frame. This Uberti reproduction follows that same design, updated with a 3.5 inch snub barrel and modern .38 Special chambering.
It is manufactured by Uberti in Italy and imported by Taylor's & Company out of Virginia. Uberti has been building period-correct reproductions for decades and is widely regarded as the standard for Old West replicas. Taylor's backs their imports and handles service and support here in the States.
Rounds load one at a time through the loading gate on the right side of the frame, just like the originals. Since the Open Top design skips the ejector rod for a cleaner profile, spent cases are pushed out through the gate with a pencil, dowel, or the tip of a fresh cartridge. Straight-walled .38 Special cases slide out easily, so it is less of a chore than it sounds.
It is a great fit. The single action lockwork, mild .38 Special recoil, and quick-handling 3.5 inch barrel make it fast and pleasant on a CAS stage. The Army-size walnut grip gives most hands plenty to hold onto, and the case hardened frame looks right at home next to any period rig.
