Taylor's & Company keeps the legend alive with this pistol grip version, manufactured by Uberti in Italy with the fit and finish that has made that partnership a favorite among lever gun enthusiasts.
Most 1873 reproductions wear a straight stock, so the checkered pistol grip buttstock on this one gives it a more refined, sporting rifle character. The matching checkered forend adds grip where you want it, and the case hardened frame brings those swirling blues and browns that make every rifle look a little different from the next. Hanging off the front is a full octagon 24.25 inch blued barrel with a 1:16 twist, capped with a dovetailed blade front sight paired to a buckhorn rear. It all adds up to a rifle that measures 43.25 inches overall and carries around 8.2 pounds, which settles nicely on target and soaks up recoil.
The full length magazine tube under that long barrel holds 13 rounds of .45 Colt, plus one in the chamber. This rifle is manufactured by Uberti in Italy and imported by Taylor's & Company, who build their catalog to their own specs. Uberti has decades of experience reproducing classic Winchester designs, and their 1873s are widely regarded as some of the best-made toggle-link rifles you can buy today.
It's an excellent fit. The toggle-link action on the 1873 platform is famously smooth and quick to cycle, which is why it remains the dominant rifle design in cowboy action competition. The .45 Colt chambering pairs perfectly with single action revolvers in the same caliber, and the 13+1 capacity covers a full stage with rounds to spare.
The full octagon barrel adds weight up front, bringing the rifle to about 8.2 pounds overall. That extra heft steadies your hold and keeps muzzle rise almost nonexistent with .45 Colt loads. You also get a long sight radius between the blade front and buckhorn rear, which makes precise shots easier than with shorter carbines.
Rounds feed through the loading gate on the right side of the frame into the full length tubular magazine, just like the original design. The magazine holds 13 rounds of .45 Colt, and you can top it off anytime without opening the action. Cycle the lever to chamber a round and you're ready to go.
