A 4 inch .44 Mag is normally a handful, which is exactly why Taurus ported this one from the factory. The gas expansion porting vents pressure upward at the muzzle to cut flip and felt recoil, and paired with the full underlug barrel profile and soft rubber grip, it makes magnum loads noticeably more manageable and faster between shots. When you want an easy day at the range, load up .44 Special and this thing turns downright pleasant.
The fixed serrated ramp front sight pairs with a micrometer click-adjustable rear, so you can dial in windage and elevation for your preferred load, whether that is 240 grain hunting ammo or lighter Special fare. The cylinder features dual lockup, engaging at the rear and at the crane for solid stability under heavy chamber pressures, and a transfer bar safety keeps the hammer off the firing pin unless the trigger is pulled fully rearward. The Taurus Security System is built in as well if you want to render the gun inoperable with the turn of a key.
The 4 inch barrel keeps overall length to about 9.4 inches, making this the most packable of the Model 44 lineup. It is a natural fit as a trail companion in bear country, a hog gun for close cover, a home-defense revolver with authority to spare, or simply a fun magnum for the range. Plenty of gun, no fuss.
Yes. Like any .44 Magnum revolver, the Taurus 44 also chambers and fires .44 Special. Specials are a great option for lower-recoil practice sessions, and many owners run them for most range work while saving full-power Magnum loads for hunting or defense.
Quite a bit. The factory-tuned porting vents gas upward at the muzzle, which cuts muzzle flip and felt recoil noticeably compared to a non-ported 4 inch magnum. Combined with the 45 ounce steel frame and shock-absorbing rubber grip, full-power loads stay controllable and follow-up shots come faster. Just expect a little extra blast and flash, which is normal for any ported barrel.
That is one of its most popular uses. The 4 inch barrel keeps it compact enough to carry comfortably in a chest or belt holster, and .44 Magnum has long been a trusted choice for backcountry protection. The matte stainless construction also holds up well to weather and sweaty holsters better than blued carbon steel.
