Tanfoglio has been building competition-oriented pistols for decades, and the Defiant Stock I is the entry point into their Defiant lineup, but calling it an entry-level gun undersells what it actually is. This is a purpose-built production and practical shooting pistol, designed from the ground up to meet the requirements of IPSC Production Division, IDPA SSP, and ESP classes. The 10mm chambering gives it a personality all its own, making it equally interesting to hunters, woods carry folks, and serious competitors who want more horsepower than 9mm or .45 ACP offers.
The frame is borrowed directly from the Stock III, featuring a full-length railed dust cover that runs to the muzzle. That extended fore end serves two purposes: it gives you a natural forward mounting point for a light or laser, and it shifts the balance forward in a way that helps tame muzzle flip and keeps the gun flat under recoil. The beavertail frame design helps with hand placement and high-grip ergonomics, while slide checkering front and rear gives you a positive grip on the slide whether you're running press checks or clearing a malfunction on a timer.
The barrel is a traditionally rifled cylindrical design, which plays well with a broad spectrum of bullet types including cast and coated lead bullets that polygonal barrels typically don't handle as well. The DA/SA action with a single-sided thumb safety keeps things in line with IDPA and IPSC production rules, and the interchangeable front sight means you have options down the road if you want to swap in a fiber optic or a different blade height.
The frame and slide are steel with a black oxide finish, and the gun ships with wood grips that give it a classic look. The overall weight runs around 42 ounces, which is substantial, but that mass works in your favor in 10mm, absorbing recoil and keeping the gun on target between shots. This is a full-size, serious pistol, and it wears that identity well.
The Stock I was designed specifically with competitive shooting rules in mind. It fits within the requirements for IPSC Practical Shooting Production Division, as well as IDPA SSP and ESP classes. Its DA/SA action, fixed sights, and overall configuration make it a solid choice for those divisions without needing modifications.
The full-length railed dust cover does double duty.
