This no thumb safety model holds 13+1 with the extended magazine or 10+1 with the flush-fit mag, nearly doubling the round count of the first-generation Shield while keeping the same slim 1.1 inch width that made it so easy to carry in the first place. At around 20 ounces with a 3.1 inch barrel, it disappears under a t-shirt and stays comfortable through a full day on the belt.
The flat face trigger is the upgrade you notice first at the range. It gives you consistent finger placement shot after shot, with a crisp break and a short, tactile reset that makes fast follow-ups feel natural. The grip texture got reworked too, aggressive enough to stay planted under recoil but not so rough that it chews up your side while carrying inside the waistband. Combine that with the 18 degree grip angle and the slightly longer grip that gets all three fingers on the gun, and you have a micro-compact that shoots more like a bigger pistol.

In most cases, yes. The Shield Plus keeps nearly the same external dimensions as the earlier Shield and Shield 2.0, so the majority of holsters built for those pistols work fine with it. The main change is in the grip and magazine, which sit above the holster line anyway. It never hurts to double check with your holster maker, but compatibility is one of the big perks of this design.
Capacity is the headline. The original 9mm Shield held 7 or 8 rounds, while the Shield Plus bumps that to 10+1 flush or 13+1 with the extended magazine, all while staying the same 1.1 inches wide. Smith & Wesson also gave it a flat face trigger with a crisper break and shorter reset, plus a rebalanced grip texture that holds firm without being harsh on skin during carry.
No, this version (part number 13248) has no manual thumb safety. Many carriers prefer this setup for a simpler draw stroke with nothing extra to sweep off under stress. It still includes internal safeties and the striker-fired trigger system, and Smith & Wesson offers a separate thumb safety version if you want one.
