Smith & Wesson's Performance Center doesn't put their name on something unless it's been dialed in beyond what rolls off a standard production line, and the M&P9 M2.0 Metal Carry Comp is a perfect example of that. The biggest departure from a standard M&P is the frame itself: a rigid T6 aluminum chassis that adds a bit of heft and a noticeably solid feel in the hand, without turning the gun into a boat anchor at 28.1 ounces unloaded. That aluminum foundation pairs with a stainless steel slide and barrel, both finished in Gray Armornite for corrosion resistance and durability.
The namesake feature here is the Carry Comp system, which uses a ported barrel and slide to redirect propellant gas upward during firing, pushing the muzzle down and reducing felt recoil. S&W also engineered a ClearSight Cut into the slide, which routes gas away from the optic window so it doesn't cloud your view or foul the lens mid-session. The flat-face trigger has been tuned by the Performance Center for a cleaner, more consistent break than you'd get on a standard M&P, and the 18-degree grip angle helps the gun point naturally without having to think about it.
Right out of the box, this gun is genuinely set up to run. The front sight is a Tritium night sight, positioned ahead of the port so soot from firing doesn't obscure it. The rear is a blacked-out, serrated notch sight with a deep U-shape that pairs well with that front dot for fast target acquisition. The slide is already cut for a red dot, and S&W includes an optic mounting plate kit so you can get a compatible optic installed without sending anything out. Four interchangeable palmswell inserts in sizes S, M, ML, and L let you dial in the grip fit, which is especially useful given the aluminum frame's slightly different feel compared to a polymer grip. Because the M2.0 Metal Carry Comp shares its overall footprint with the standard M&P M2.0 platform, it's compatible with M2.0 magazines and many existing M&P holsters, though holsters cut specifically for the Carry Comp's ported barrel and slide profile will give you the best fit.
No, this model does not include a manual thumb safety. The Performance Center M&P9 M2.0 Metal Carry Comp ships without one, and Smith & Wesson does not offer a thumb safety option on their Performance Center M&P models. If a manual safety is a requirement for you, you'd need to look at a standard M&P M2.0 variant instead.
The slide is cut for the Shield/RMS optic footprint and ships with a mounting plate kit that accommodates several of the most popular red dot optics. Because the Carry Comp also features the ClearSight Cut to redirect gas away from the optic window, it's well-suited for running a red dot in extended range sessions. You'll want to confirm your specific optic's footprint before purchasing.
Many standard M&P M2.0 holsters will work since the pistol shares the same basic footprint, but holsters molded specifically for the Metal Carry Comp's ported barrel and slide profile will give you the most precise fit, retention, and draw. If you're running a red dot or weapon light, make sure your holster is cut for those additions as well.
The Metal Carry Comp adds three significant upgrades over the standard M2.0: the T6 aluminum frame instead of polymer, the integrated PowerPort compensator system with ported barrel and slide, and the Performance Center trigger tune. It also includes the ClearSight Cut in the slide and ships with a Tritium night sight front out of the box as part of the Performance Center package.
The pistol weighs 28.1 ounces unloaded, which is moderately heavier than a polymer-frame M&P of similar size due to the aluminum frame. It's on the larger end of what most people would consider a concealed carry gun, though people do carry it, especially in colder weather with heavier cover garments or in an OWB setup. It's an excellent duty, home defense, or range gun regardless of carry role.
The Carry Comp system does reduce muzzle rise and felt recoil compared to an unported barrel, particularly when running hotter 9mm loads like +P ammunition. The effect is more noticeable in practical shooting scenarios where fast follow-up shots matter. The aluminum frame itself also contributes to a solid, planted feel during firing, so the two work together to make this one of the flatter-shooting M&Ps in the lineup.
