On October 6, 2023, Jerry Miculek stood at the grand opening of Smith & Wesson's new Tennessee headquarters and hit six steel plates at seven yards in 1.88 seconds — with a revolver. That run set an NRA World Record, and the Model 327 WR is the production version of the gun he did it with. To commemorate the record, S&W limited production to exactly 1,880 units.
The platform is built around a scandium alloy N-Frame, which gives you the size and strength of S&W's large-frame revolver without the weight penalty. The cylinder is titanium, keeping rotational mass low for faster cycling and snappier target transitions. The 5-inch barrel is ported stainless steel with a black finish, and the double-action-only trigger is chromed stainless — smooth, consistent, and tuned by the Performance Center to Miculek's specs. Chambered in 9mm Luger with an eight-round capacity, it also makes reloads more accessible than traditional magnum calibers.
The C.O.R.E. (Competition Optics Ready Equipment) system is built into the frame, and the Vortex CompDot 8 MOA red dot is already mounted and included. The CompDot was built for exactly this kind of use — its large sight window gives you more target visibility and faster acquisition between plates or ports. The brass bead front sight and fully adjustable rear are also there if you want to run irons. Jerry Miculek's signature laminated wood grips are fitted from the factory and shaped specifically for the speed required between holster draw and target acquisition.
Everything ships in a foam-lined Pelican hard case alongside five moon clips, a moon clip speed loader, and a moon clip unloader — so you can run drills from the moment you get to the range. The only things you need to add are ammo and a holster.
The 9mm chambering was a deliberate choice for speed-focused competition shooting. Rimless 9mm cartridges load and eject cleanly via moon clips, which allows for extremely fast reloads compared to rimmed revolver cartridges. The caliber also produces less recoil than .357 Magnum, which helps maintain sight alignment and speed up follow-up shots — exactly the kind of edge that matters in timed competition.
Moon clips are thin metal discs that hold a full charge of 9mm cartridges in a circular arrangement matching the cylinder's chamber spacing. You load the entire clip into the cylinder at once, which makes reloading much faster than loading individual rounds. The 327 WR ships with five moon clips plus a dedicated speed loader and unloader tool, so you can quickly prep and clear clips between stages.
Yes. The C.O.R.E. (Competition Optics Ready Equipment) system built into the frame is designed to accept a wide range of red dot optics using the included footplate system. The Vortex CompDot is a strong choice right out of the box, but if you have a preferred optic that uses a compatible footplate pattern, you can make the swap.
Smith & Wesson capped production at exactly 1,880 units, a number chosen to reflect Jerry Miculek's 1.88-second world record time. Once these are gone, there are no plans for additional production runs, which makes this a genuinely limited release and not just a marketing label.
It was engineered from the ground up as a competition revolver, and that's where it truly shines — Steel Challenge, ICORE, and similar speed-based formats. The lightweight frame, DAO trigger, optic, and eight-round capacity all point squarely at the range. That said, it's a fully functional and accurate revolver chambered in a widely available cartridge, so it's versatile enough for range use beyond formal competition.
The Performance Center shop hand-fits and tunes each revolver to tighter tolerances than standard production guns. On the 327 WR specifically, that means a hand-smooth DAO trigger, a scandium frame and titanium cylinder combination that's lighter than traditional steel, a ported barrel to reduce muzzle rise, and a factory-mounted optic system — all built to Miculek's competition specifications rather than general-purpose standards.
