Before magnum revolvers were even a category, there was this gun. Smith & Wesson introduced the original .357 Magnum in 1935, first sold as the Registered Magnum, and it became the sidearm serious lawmen and handgunners wanted on their hip. The Model 27 Classic puts that legend back into production, and it does the old gun justice. The deep, high-polish bluing on the carbon steel frame, barrel, and cylinder is the kind of finish you rarely see on new revolvers anymore, and the checkered square butt walnut grips complete the look.
This is a full-size N-Frame revolver, the same large frame S&W used for its biggest magnums, and it tips the scales at 41.2 ounces unloaded. That heft is a good thing here. All that steel soaks up recoil, so full-power .357 Magnum loads stay manageable and .38 Special feels downright pleasant for long range sessions. The 4 inch barrel keeps the overall length at 9.25 inches, a sweet spot that balances sight radius and handling. You get a traditional DA/SA action with an exposed color case hammer and trigger, plus the classic style thumbpiece on the cylinder release.
Up top you'll find a pinned serrated ramp front sight paired with a micro-adjustable rear, so you can dial in your zero for whatever load you're running. Between the adjustable sights, the smooth single action break, and the weight of the gun settling everything down, this revolver rewards careful shooting at the range and holds its own as a woods or nightstand gun too.

Yes. Like any revolver chambered in .357 Magnum, it will also run .38 Special and .38 Special +P without any modification. A lot of owners practice with cheaper, softer shooting .38s and save the magnums for the woods or the nightstand. On a 41 ounce N-Frame like this, .38s feel like almost nothing.
It's the direct descendant. Smith & Wesson introduced the world's first .357 Magnum revolver in 1935 as the Registered Magnum, and that platform later became the Model 27. The Classic series version is modern production built to honor that original design, with the blued carbon steel, walnut grips, and checkered topstrap styling that made the old guns famous.
Very well, and the weight is the reason. At 41.2 ounces of solid carbon steel on the large N-Frame, this gun absorbs recoil far better than smaller framed .357s. Full-house magnum loads are firm but controllable, and follow-up shots come back on target quickly.
The rear sight is micro-adjustable for windage and elevation, paired with a pinned serrated ramp front. That means you can zero it precisely for your preferred load, whether that's light .38 target ammo or heavy .357 hunting rounds. It's a big advantage over fixed-sight revolvers if you shoot a variety of ammunition.
