There's a reason the 629 Hunter keeps showing up in the hands of serious handgun hunters. Smith & Wesson's Performance Center took the classic N-frame .44 Magnum and built it specifically for the field, starting with a 7.5-inch two-tone stainless barrel wearing a custom muzzle brake. That brake does noticeable work, flattening muzzle rise and softening recoil enough that full-power magnum loads stay manageable through a full cylinder. Fair warning, porting makes any .44 louder, so bring good ear protection. Your shoulder will thank you either way.
This is where the 629 Hunter separates itself from a standard production 629. The single/double action gets hand-tuned at the Performance Center, and the difference shows up in a smooth, consistent single-action break that makes precise shots at hunting distances far easier. The chrome trigger includes an adjustable trigger stop to kill overtravel, and the chrome flash hammer rounds out the custom touches. Trigger pulls from independent testing have come in right around the four-pound mark in single action, which is exactly where a hunting revolver should live.
Most hunting revolvers make you buy glass separately. This one ships with a 6 MOA red/green dot optic mounted on the integral rail, plus a dovetailed red ramp front sight and adjustable rear if you prefer irons. The finger-grooved black synthetic grip soaks up recoil and gives you solid purchase with gloves on. At just under 62 ounces, there's enough heft to steady your hold without becoming a burden on a stand or still hunt.
Six rounds of .44 Magnum with this level of accuracy covers whitetail, hogs, and black bear at practical handgun ranges, and owners regularly report clean takes at 50 to 75 yards from a rest. It also happily digests .44 Special when you want relaxed range sessions. Between the tuned action, the brake, and the included optic, this is a complete hunting package, not a project gun.

Yes. Like any .44 Magnum revolver, it safely fires .44 S&W Special, which is a great option for lower-recoil practice sessions or new shooters getting comfortable with the gun. Just give the chambers a good cleaning afterward since the shorter Special cases can leave a carbon ring.
The Performance Center version gets hand-tuned single and double action work, a chrome trigger with an overtravel stop, a chrome hammer, and the custom muzzle brake on its two-tone barrel.
