They're mechanically the same L-frame revolver. The main difference is the finish: the 586 is blued carbon steel while the 686 is stainless. The 586 Classic also comes with traditional checkered wood grips for that vintage Distinguished Combat Magnum look, whereas most 686 models ship with rubber grips.
