Most revolvers give you six. The Performance Center Model 327 TRR8 gives you eight rounds of .357 Magnum, and it does it in a package that handles better than its size suggests. The frame is scandium alloy on S&W's big N-frame pattern, which keeps the empty weight around 35 ounces. That's lighter than most all-steel N-frames by a wide margin, so it carries well on a belt at the range and swings between targets quickly, while the 5 inch stainless steel barrel keeps enough weight up front to settle the sights.
This isn't a standard production gun with a fancy name. The Performance Center shop hand-tunes the action and fits a PC trigger with an adjustable trigger stop, so the double action pull is smooth and the single action break is crisp with minimal overtravel. The cylinder is cut for moon clips, which turns reloads from a fumble into a two-second affair and makes ejection positive even with dirty chambers. If you've never run a moon-clipped revolver, it changes how you think about wheelgun capacity in a hurry.
The TRR8 ships with removable Picatinny-style rails for the top strap and under the barrel, so you can run a red dot up top, a light underneath, or strip both off and shoot it clean. The iron sights are no afterthought either: an interchangeable front paired with an adjustable V-notch rear gets you dialed for whatever load you're feeding it.
Chambered for .357 Magnum, it also digests .38 Special +P, which makes long practice sessions a lot more pleasant and keeps ammo costs reasonable. Run soft-shooting .38s for drills and steel, then load full-house magnums when it matters. Between the eight-shot cylinder, the tuned trigger, and the mounting flexibility, this is the revolver for someone who wants classic S&W craftsmanship without giving up modern capability.
Yes. Like nearly all .357 Magnum revolvers, the TRR8 also chambers .38 Special, including +P loads. Plenty of owners run affordable .38s for practice and save full-power magnums for defensive use or when they want the extra punch. It's an easy way to keep training costs down.
The 327 TRR8 is built on Smith & Wesson's large N-frame, the same platform originally designed around big-bore cartridges like the .44 Magnum. Since .357 Magnum is a smaller-diameter round, the N-frame cylinder has room for eight charge holes instead of the usual six. You get two extra rounds without any compromise in strength.
That's exactly what the TRR8 was designed for. It ships with removable Picatinny-style rails, one for the top strap for optics and one under the barrel for a light or laser. If you'd rather run it as a traditional wheelgun, take the rails off and use the adjustable iron sights.
At about 35 ounces, it's noticeably lighter than an all-steel N-frame, so you will feel magnum loads a bit more than you would with a heavier gun. That said, the full-size grip, 5 inch barrel, and overall balance keep recoil very manageable for most people. With .38 Specials it's downright soft shooting.
