There's a reason the M&P15-22 has been one of the best-selling rimfire rifles for years. Smith & Wesson built it from the ground up as a dedicated .22 LR, not a conversion kit bolted into a centerfire gun, so the blowback action runs the way a rimfire should. The controls all sit where you expect them on an AR: charging handle, bolt catch, mag release, and a two-position safety lever. That makes it a great trainer if you already run a centerfire AR, and just as good a first rifle for someone learning the platform without the recoil, noise, or ammo bill. This version stands out with its Kryptek Highlander camo finish across the receiver, handguard, and stock, a pattern that looks great and blends in even better.
The Sport model gets a 10 inch slim M&P handguard with Magpul M-LOK slots, so you can bolt on lights, bipods, or hand stops without pulling the handguard off. Smith & Wesson even tosses a 2 inch M-LOK rail panel in the box to get you started. Up top you get Magpul MBUS folding sights front and rear, which fold flat the moment you decide to mount a red dot or scope on the flat top receiver. The 16.5 inch carbon steel barrel is threaded 1/2×28 behind the flash hider, which is the standard rimfire suppressor thread, so quiet range days are on the table too.

Absolutely. The flat top receiver has a standard rail on top, and the Magpul MBUS sights fold flat out of the way, so a red dot or rimfire scope mounts right up with no gunsmithing. Plenty of owners run a budget red dot on these and it makes an already easy rifle even easier to shoot well.

Subsonic and standard velocity loads may not cycle the action consistently, so save those for suppressed shooting once the rifle is broken in.
