The FPC line has been one of Smith & Wesson's smartest ideas in years, and chambering it in 5.7x28mm might be the best fit yet. The flat-shooting, low-recoil 5.7 cartridge picks up real velocity out of a 16.25 inch barrel, and the blowback action paired with an integrated recoil buffer keeps the whole experience soft and quick on target. Unfolded, the carbine measures 30 and 3/8 inches. Fold it at the hinge and it shrinks to roughly 16 and 3/8 inches, small enough to ride in a backpack, range bag, or behind a truck seat without anyone giving it a second look.
The big trick here is that the FPC folds sideways instead of over the top, so a red dot or scope mounted on the full-length Picatinny rail stays put and holds zero while folded. Deploying it is fast and intuitive: swing it open, insert a mag, rack the charging handle, and you're in business. The polymer stock holds two spare magazines with quick-release tabs, which means with the mag in the gun you're carrying all three included 10-rounders on the carbine itself. QD sling mounts on the stock and handguard plus M-LOK slots along the forend round out a very practical package.
