Description

The Smith & Wesson M&P Bodyguard 2.0 is a ground-up redesign, not just a refresh. S&W took everything that people asked for from the original Bodyguard 380 and addressed it point by point: the heavy DAO trigger is gone, replaced by a flat-face striker-fired system with a clean break and short reset. The old 6-round single-stack is replaced by a double-stack that feeds 10+1 with the flush magazine and 12+1 with the extended. And the cramped, boxy feel of older pocket pistols is replaced by a grip that actually fits your hand, complete with an 18-degree grip angle, palm swell, beavertail, and aggressive M&P-style stippling. All of that in a package that is 5.5" long, 4" tall, and less than an inch wide at 0.88".

Midnight Bronze Bodyguard 2.0: Finish and Build Quality

This particular model is the Midnight Bronze variant, an exclusive colorway that pairs a Midnight Bronze Cerakote polymer frame with a stainless steel slide finished in S&W's Armornite coating. Armornite is a proprietary hardening process that outperforms standard bluing and many other coatings in corrosion and wear resistance. The barrel is stainless steel as well, with a 1:10" twist rate. At 9.8 oz. unloaded, this gun carries like you almost forgot it's there.

Sights, Safety, and Controls on the Bodyguard 2.0

The Bodyguard 2.0 comes equipped with a tritium bright dot front sight and a rapid acquisition U-notch rear, which puts it ahead of a lot of pocket pistols that ship with sights barely worth using. This version includes the manual ambidextrous thumb safety, which is a real plus for pocket carry or for anyone who wants that extra layer of security. The magazine release is reversible for lefties, and the aggressive slide serrations give you solid purchase when racking or press-checking, even under less-than-ideal conditions. Two magazines come in the box: one flush-fit 10-rounder and one extended 12-rounder, so you're ready to go right out of the package.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the Bodyguard 2.0 and the original Bodyguard 380?

The Bodyguard 2.0 is a complete redesign, not an incremental update. The original used a heavy double-action-only hammer-fired system with a 6-round single-stack magazine. The 2.0 switches to a striker-fired flat-face trigger, nearly doubles capacity to 10+1 or 12+1 via a double-stack design, ditches the built-in laser, and adds significantly better ergonomics, sights, and slide serrations.

Does the Bodyguard 2.0 Midnight Bronze model come with a manual safety?

Yes, this specific model (MPN 14667) includes an ambidextrous manual thumb safety. S&W offers the Bodyguard 2.0 in both safety and no-safety configurations, so it is worth confirming the variant before purchasing. The thumb safety on this gun is positively indexed and textured for reliable operation.

Is the Bodyguard 2.0 good for pocket carry?

It is genuinely well-suited for pocket carry given its 0.88" width and 9.8 oz. unloaded weight. Range reviewers have noted that the gun barely prints in a shorts or pants pocket. A quality pocket holster is strongly recommended to protect the trigger, maintain orientation, and prevent lint buildup in the action.

What does the Midnight Bronze finish look like, and is it durable?

The Midnight Bronze is a warm, dark bronze-toned Cerakote applied to the polymer frame, paired with the Armornite-finished stainless slide for a two-tone appearance. Cerakote is one of the most durable firearm finishes available, offering excellent resistance to corrosion, abrasion, and the daily wear that comes with concealed carry use.

Can I use original Bodyguard 380 magazines in the Bodyguard 2.0?

No. The Bodyguard 2.0 uses its own double-stack magazine design, which is not compatible with the original Bodyguard 380's single-stack magazines. The two platforms are dimensionally different in the magazine well.

How does the Bodyguard 2.0 handle recoil for a .380 micro pistol?

Range testing has shown recoil to be mild and manageable, which is somewhat expected with .380 Auto, but the Bodyguard 2.0's ergonomics genuinely help. The beavertail, palm swell, 18-degree grip angle, and stippled grip texture work together to keep muzzle flip in check and allow for fast follow-up shots. It handles noticeably better than most pocket pistols in its class.
